Chapter 58- Scooby doo!
POV: Emily
Word Count: 4040

April 19, 2010; Monday

The alarm clock went off at 7:30 and neither myself nor Zac wanted to get up. We’d been home a few days and jet lag was fucking ridiculous. The alarm went off again and four minutes later Casey was jumping in the center of our bed.

“Wakey Wakey!” he said.

“If you don’t stop, you’re going to be in serious pain.” Zac grumbled.

He yanked the cover off us both. “Come on sleepy heads, you’ve had days to recover.”

I groaned and sat up. “You do know sometimes we sleep naked and you yanking covers back is just weird?” I asked.

He smiled. “I know. Come on, breakfast is almost ready.”

I looked over at Zac and we got up. Casey went downstairs and we got dressed for the day. Zac went with jeans, his social development t-shirt and a button up blue and red stripped shirt. I opted for blue jeans and a green t-shirt.

“Not dressing up I see.”

“Pft, I’m dressing down so when I have to scream at people today I’ll be comfortable.”

“Ike said the place was clean.”

I looked at him. “Yes, that’s what you all said last time too.”

We got what we needed and went downstairs, he had fixed a good breakfast and seriously if I woke up to this every day, I may just keep him. We got woke up a few more minutes and then the three of us walked to 3CG where Zac let us inside. I first went to the warehouse and found that it was not bad. I was pleased, I didn’t need to scream. I then checked the studio which had been cleaned very recently and I looked at Casey.

“It was a disaster zone and I reminded them you would be checking. They cleaned up Friday.”

“Good for them.” I said.

I then went to the office and both of us groaned at the stacks of paperwork. We both sat down as no one would be here until eleven, but at 10:45 Stephanie came in and sat down.

“So, the new girl starts today.” She said.

Both of us looked at her. “What new girl?” I asked.

“Seriously? Neither Taylor nor Isaac told you?” She asked.

“No.”We said.

“My god! Thankfully I showed up first! You don’t know about Gina then?”

“What about Gina?” I asked.

“She has to quit, she’s pregnant and the doctor told her she couldn’t do any lifting or bending, which is like 95% of her job. She told Taylor the Monday after you left and we hired a replacement last week. She should be here any minute but she’ll need to see Zac first as he does all the employee shit.”

“Except wages, I do that now.” I said.

“Well, she can see both of you.”

“I didn’t know Gina and her husband were even trying.” I said.

“They weren’t, this little bundle is a surprise. They talked and she’s going to stay home for a bit after the baby is born. It’s why we chose to hire someone. Taylor and Isaac interviewed her, or should I say grilled her.”

I rolled my eyes. “They do that during interviews, very precise they are.”

She got up and went to the front and five minutes later she was bringing in a pretty woman. She had jet black hair and bright green eyes, she was tall as Stephanie was over 5 foot 7, and this woman was a bit over her and she had on flats. Her skin was olive in completion and she had a great smile. She actually came to me first, extending a hand and saying hello, using Mrs. Hanson as my name. So, she was at least familiar with who we were. She greeted Zac the same way, addressing him as Mr. Hanson.

“Please, call me Zac.” He said.

“What is your name?” I asked.

She blushed some. “Velma Louise Jackson.”

I smiled and Zac giggled. “It’s not your name, it’s just my wife is obsessed with Scooby Doo and well, her favorite character besides Scooby is Velma.” Zac said.

She exhaled. “My mother named me Velma after my grandmother but then she found Scooby. It’s really ok by me as it’s my favorite show as well.”

“Really? No one else here likes that show but me! Which one is your favorite?”

“Definitely Scooby-doo but Fred’s not bad either. Daphne is just a bit too much for me though.”

“Always the prep in the show, Scrappy-Doo isn’t bad either he’s quite funny.”

Both Stephanie and Zac groaned. “What?” I asked.

“We’ll never hear the end of it!” he said.

“Get over it. But, on a serious note, Zac will get you entered in and I’ll handle your wages and stuff. Did Taylor or Isaac mention a memo?”

“Yes. Taylor said he would give you one. He stated that Zac can never keep up with them but you were much more organized.”

Zac feigned being hurt but started the computer anyway and began to enter her information; I quickly found the memo from Taylor under 15 others.

“Taylor memo’d me to hell the last two weeks.”

“You? Look at my desk!” Zac said.

I glanced over and sure enough his was worse than mine with little scraps of paper.

Velma smiled. “Did you both enjoy your honeymoon?”

“We did! It was quite awesome and I’m already looking at skydiving places in Tulsa.”

Zac groaned and kept entering her information.

“Oh man! I did that a few months ago and it was awesome. I can recommend a place here in town, they go just outside town and the view is amazing!”

“That would be awesome, I got the feeling Zac didn’t much enjoy it.”

“No, falling ten thousand feet isn’t really my idea of thrilling. Willingly jumping is just insane, which is why you like it.”

We both giggled. “It is to me. I wouldn’t really mind going if Zac didn’t want too.”

Zac looked up at her and then me confused and I could see the etched lines of worry underneath the calm surface.

“Zac’s a little protective and he’d go if I asked him too, I am sure. He may not like it, but he will go.”

“He can come too; they have an observation location for others. My girlfriend at the time went with me but she’s terrified of heights, so she stayed there.”

“That would be awesome. I’ll take the number; it’ll be a little while before we can though. My desk has to be clear or the slave driver known as Taylor would pitch a conniption fit.”

“I am not a slave driver unless its inventory and then I will crack my whip. Morning Zac, Velma and Mrs. Hanson.”

“You guys realize your giving her some large ego boosts with that right? Keep that up and you’ll be calling her Mrs. Hanson all the damn time and I mean even at home.” Zac said.

“Hey, at least I am official now. Carrick has been calling me that for months now, every e-mail, text message, or phone call and it was long before we got married.”

Velma smiled. “It’s a nice name to have, not one I want mind you.”

“Hey, Mac’s still single.” Zac said.

We all giggled, because that was true.

“Ok, Mrs. Hanson she’s all yours.” Zac said.

“I am stealing Zac. You have to hear that song we recorded and we have to get busy.”

“Want to borrow my whip Taylor? You may need it; it’s been vacation time for like three weeks for us.”

Zac looked at me a little paranoid.

“Na, I have my own.” Taylor said and winked at me.

Zac got up anyway and went with him but he came back. “Remember, we go to the gun range at 2:30, be ready to leave.”

“I will be.” I said.

He then headed to the studio and I looked at Velma.

“Gun range? The rumors are true? Zac likes guns?”

“He does, quite a bit actually. Yeah, we had a mishap a few months ago and he doesn’t want me to be afraid of the sounds like I was then. So, he’s been taking me every week so I can hear them.”

“It’s a good idea really.”

I smiled and put in her base wage information and got tax paper information. Truthfully, Zac was suppose to put the gun in my hand today, but we both agreed that not everyone needed that information so as far as everyone went I was there to listen. I finished entering her in and then moved to the end of the desk.

“I know things will be crazy here at the studio for a while, the new album and tours coming up, Hanson day is around the corner and everyone will be busy. However, if you have questions it is far better to ask than to assume. The studio is off limits to everyone but the boys and I, unless one of them invites you back, don’t go in there. If the recording light is on, don’t even knock. I’ve seen them mad when a perfect recording is messed up because of that, it’s not pretty.”

“I understand.” She replied.

“Our dress code is pretty simple in that anything comfortable is acceptable however booty shorts, tube tops, anything see through, or extremely provocative is not allowed and I will make you go home and change. You represent Hanson and 3CG when you’re working and we don’t present ourselves as whores. It’s not advised you wear skirts or dresses because you will be bending, stooping, stretching, climbing ladders, and other things and they tend to hinder your movements.”

“I don’t wear dresses normally anyway, I like my jeans and my shorts. Are there any other men that work here?”

“Yes, we have a male employee Henry who does most of the very heavy lifting. Aside from him, Casey is in and out all the time.”

“I met him last week; he sat in on my interview.”

“He’s a great guy really and everyone here is nice, however I will give you the warning now before you hear the horror stories. I don’t take kindly to being disrespected and neither does Hanson. Don’t ask them questions about family unless they bring it up, I’m pretty much OK with discussing things but I’m not going to answer personal questions. I am generally a very nice person but when I am pissed off you will know it and it’s best to not make it worse.”

“Casey mentioned an atomic explosion, what exactly is that?”

I giggled some. “Those are in reference to my temper. There not often and the last one was a few weeks before our wedding. I was out for a bit and I came back to a stack of invoices that weren’t completed properly and a warehouse that looked like a war zone, I was not pleased. I scream and I yell and it’s not pretty.”

“I wondered because Taylor and Isaac both cringed when he mentioned it.”

“Yes, don’t let them fool you the studio was a complete pig sty and I went off on them as well. They maybe my boss but it doesn’t mean they don’t listen to me or any other employees.”

She smiled. “I think I’ll fit right in.”

I smiled and we finished going over the rules which weren’t many, but they still had to be gone over. We went over her job duties and who she would report too. I then walked her around the warehouse and studio, showing her where she couldn’t go, which was basically just the studio and offices if none of us were there. I finally handed her over to Stephanie at noon and got to do some of my work before Zac was standing at the door tapping his foot waiting on me. We left at 2:35 and he drove straight there and we went inside. He registered just himself though and I crossed my arms.

“Zachary.”

“We’re doing two sessions, the first one you’ll be with me and not firing, the second one you will be.”

“I am holding you to that.”

He got his chosen hand gun, the same kind that Aaron used and we went back. He made me watch everything he did and then quizzed me on it! I felt a little like a child being reprimanded for doing something wrong, but when he registered the second session he put my name down and his. We had the same area, all the way on the end alone and away from every other person here.

“Are you sure this is what you want?”

“Yes. I don’t want to accidentally shoot you or Casey because I can’t handle them. I don’t want to be in that position where even if it comes to me, I can’t touch it.”

He clipped a new target up and sent it out and then got my hand pulling me to where he was standing, he laid the gun down on the counter facing away and showed me where the safety was.

“When you’re ready, pick it up, point it away and turn the safety off. You’re aiming for that target.”

He then put headphones on and stepped behind me, where I usually was. I stood there a moment, so honestly I never expected him to actually jump out of the plane and I never expected that he’d really step aside, what I did expect was much more resistance than I was getting. Yet, here I was standing in front of a loaded gun and a target and I couldn’t even move.

I felt his arms come around me. “If you thought I didn’t know what you were doing, sorry baby. Sure, jumping was probably the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done but everyone is right, you need to be able to do this and it’s clear you’re not ready to.”

I turned and looked at him, had he just said he knew what I was doing all along? I was confused but found comfort in the way he was holding me.

“Because I kind of figured you weren’t ready, this gun has blanks. There are no real bullets in there, shooting just means you’re shooting air. It’s perfectly safe and you can pick it up.”

I carefully and cautiously picked up the gun, the cold metal against my hand felt weird to me and just having it in my hand was odd. I had been around them, but had never much liked them and this was the first time one had been in my hand. Zac moved his hand over mine and flipped the safety off.

“Its blanks Emily, just shooting air. It won’t hurt you or anything else.”

I couldn’t lie, I was terrified and shaking badly but it wasn’t because of the gun in my hand, it was the things I was remembering hearing and seeing. Splintering wood, breaking glass and terrified screams, ones that I couldn’t say were anyone’s but my own. Tiny details of that night were coming, how I felt with the gun pointed at my face, how I felt as the bullet went by my head, the fear in Aaron’s voice as he told me to get somewhere safe.

“Emily?” Zac asked.

“I can’t do this.”

“Yes, you can. I know it’s scary and it’s hard. But, you’ll learn how to do this correctly and you’ll know the proper ways. It’s ok to be afraid.”

He moved my finger off the trigger, replacing it with his own.

“Just feel it.”

I jumped when he pulled the trigger the vibration in my hand and my arm, coupled with the loud pop but he was there to stop me.

“It’s ok, I’m right here.”

He kept firing; it felt weird in my hand, felt weird all around.

I felt the light kiss to my neck. “You know this is like some form of torture?”

He wasn’t kidding either; I could feel him behind me even through his clothes and mine.

“You know I had to deal with that for weeks and all the while I wasn’t allowed to do jack about it.”

I felt another kiss. “You want to try the next clip alone?”

“Maybe.”

He replaced the clip and put it back in my hand, but he stayed right behind me. The trigger wasn’t too sensitive and it did require more pressure than I thought it would. Although, removing his hand did nothing for his very apparent erection now.

“You know you have to actually walk out of here.”

“I know…believe me I know!”

It felt strange to really fire a weapon, even if the gun was only firing blanks, and not actual bullets. He went through the proper way to keep it safe and fired a few real clips himself, distractions for him but not for me. Sadly, we had to go back to work afterwards as he had more stuff to finish and so did I. We got back about four and he went straight to the studio and I went back to the office, about 4:30 Velma knocked.

“Mrs. Hanson?”

I smiled. “Call me Emily, otherwise I may get entirely too use to that.”

She smiled. “Not a problem, I actually just wanted to talk. I’m clocked out and everything.”

“If you don’t mind me working as you talk, by all means.”

She came in and sat down, looked around Zac’s cluttered desk.

“Does he really just leave it that way?”

I glanced over. “Actually once my desk is cleared, I’ll work on his. The memo’s are probably stuff there telling him right now anyway.”

“I think it’s awesome that you share an office with him.”

I got a stack of invoices to work on. “They had me in a broom closet downstairs, but when they promoted me to GM they upgraded me. I don’t mind really, I get to see the warehouse and I see Zac more when he’s in here working on art projects.”

She smiled. “I can’t really say that Hanson is a favorite band of mine. I am more rock really, but I do listen to their music.”

“I’ve always liked the band; it’s been quite nice working with them and hearing songs. Although, my sister in law is a major fan and she bugs the daylights out of me about them.”

She giggled. “My younger sister is that way about Backstreet Boys, obsessed over them. She listens to Hanson more than me, but she’s obsessed with Nick Carter.”

“He’s very nice in person.”

“You’ve met Nick Carter?”

“Yes. I’ve actually met them all um it was the first tour I went on they were in Tampa when we were. Don’t tell my husband; Nick Carter was another obsession of mine.”

She giggled. “Do you like that? Calling him your husband?”

“I do like that. We should be getting the disc with our wedding pictures back soon and I cannot wait to see them.”

She smiled widely, she was a pretty woman.

“How are they in general? Nice?”

“Yeah, Ike seems to be the down to earth one as Zac is insane at times. Taylor fits in the middle very well and is often the peacekeeper. Yet, I have heard and seen some epic Taylor and Zac arguments.”

“I heard about those! But it’s bound to happen with the amount of stuff they do together. You need separation sometimes.”

“You do when I was out they were at our house and I needed to get away. Having all men around all the time can be horrible!”

“I understand. I have a lot of male friends and not many female friends.”

“Well, I have five brothers myself and now I have three more, not many sisters in there. Two of my brothers are gay so they have boyfriends and my sister in law is obsessed with my husband’s band and my brother’s boyfriend is too. Cornucopia of men around me.”

“Are you far from here?”

I glanced up at her, it sounded like an innocent question really but I didn’t know her.

“We’re not far.”

“Oh, there was a rumor that you and Zac have lived together for a while. A blog posted showed you both going into the same house.”

I looked at her confused. “There are pictures of that?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

She looked at the computer. “May I?”

I rolled out of her way and watched her type in the address to an Instagram account and sure enough there were several pictures of Zac and I entering the front door of our house and 3CG and other pictures of not just us but all of us.

“I should Google myself more often.”

She laughed but one came up and I clicked it. It was a photograph with written words placed on it, which weren’t very nice. She looked at me and frowned.

“Don’t pay it any attention to it Emily, there are going to be women that hate you just because he’s with you.”

“I know, it’s just this is really the first time I’ve seen anything like this. Maybe I shouldn’t look myself up.”

“There are pictures like this bashing the guys too; I try to avoid such pages because most of it is bullshit. Like that sex video.”

“Sex video?” I asked.

She looked at me. “I can access the website and it was a public post. I did a little recon before I came in for the interview. It was very brave of you two to step up and deny, not many bands would do that themselves.”

“It was the right thing to do.”

“Well, I guess I should head home. It was nice talking to you really, you seem like you’re really cool.”

“No problem, I’m always here.”

We both laughed and she got up and went to the door. “Seriously though, if Zac doesn’t want to jump again let me know. I’d love to do it again; it’s not much fun alone though.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

She walked out of the office and I watched her leave the building. It was nice to have a female that talked to me in a friendlier manner. I was costing out the last of the invoices when my phone chimed and I looked at it. It was Layla, we were meeting her the next day for lunch and she wanted confirmation so I confirmed it, god I hope we could be friends because she really needed some good friends. Zac came up at 7:45 and pretty much collapsed on the sofa.

“Remind me not to ever take that much time off again.”

“Let me guess, they just whipped your ass with drums?”

“My arms, shoulders, and butt hurt like hell.”

I smiled. “Hot tub man, you said we were getting one.”

He groaned. “We have no room for one right now.”

“Sorry, I can do something about the shoulders and arms, but your ass is your own issue.”

“What? You don’t do butt massages?”

“I do sure, but my own hurts as bad too. Up side, I’ve cleared the four hundred e-mails and Taylor’s memos.”

“Great! I haven’t even logged into the system today, I probably have four thousand.”

“Five thousand, four hundred and something I checked.”

Casey came in and collapsed as well, complaining about being tired from sitting all day long, considering they were both here I took that as a hint and closed up the programs and we went home.

“How was Velma?” Casey asked.

“She was nice, talked to me a few minutes before she left. She’s nice and polite; I’m not sure if she is a fan or not though, because she said she didn’t much listening but then she does know a few websites.”

“Just watch her, hey did you reply to Layla’s message? I got it but I couldn’t reply.”

“I did, confirmed her for lunch.”

“Great.”

I fixed dinner for us and we sat at the table, none of us were up long after that and I threatened a castration to Casey if he jumped on the bed again. Not that it would stop him.
