Isabella definitely had lungs and she’d woken us both up at 4, but because Emily had started using the pump I told her to lay back down. She really was beyond exhausted by this point, so I took her downstairs and warmed up a bottle and sat down on the love seat. It was the same feeling I’d had with Alexander, that special moment when I got to finally feed him and allow her to rest. She seemed to be a bit confused before she finally settled and had her food. She was more on a schedule but if she got hungry between feedings we didn’t deny her. Having a little girl felt different, for starters she was so different from how Alexander was. She was much louder when she was mad; she currently favored her mother when she was pissed as she would scream for me or anyone else until she took her.
Alexander had his jealous moment a few days after she came home when he kind of realized she wasn’t leaving. He’d actually hit her fairly hard and correcting him felt so wrong to me but I knew if we didn’t he’d keep on, but he still was fighting and I think it was because I was basically taking him because I couldn’t feed her and he was jealous because Emily wasn’t really doing much beyond sleeping, eating, and feeding her. She was a bit slow to eat but that was fine, a quick burp and I just sat there holding her.
The things that Emily had gone through with David are things that I never want her to experience, not the fear or the pain and certainly not anything worse. I was determined that Isabella would be a happy, normal girl. Even if I wanted to beat every guy who looked at her…
“If you’re anything like your mommy, I’ll be beating a lot of guys up.”
I swore she gave me a little smile like she knew I’d have too. I laid her down in the basinet and let her sleep like she wanted while I cleaned up. I got Alexander when he woke up and let Emily continue to sleep; I had enough milk for another three feedings. She ate again at 7, right before Alexander got up. So I got to get him changed, dressed and fed for the morning. He played and I watched the morning news. Taylor called at 8:30, Isaac at 9. But Detective Stewart called at 9:30.
“Good Morning, I tried Mrs. Hanson’s phone but got voicemail. I really needed to talk to someone.”
“Her phone is on silent, I changed it about 6 when I checked on her. I let her sleep really late this morning.”
“I understand. Are you both going to be home today?”
“Yes. She’s just now pumping so she’s been quite tired and unless I take Alexander with me I have to be here. We’ll be home all day. Why?”
“I would like to come by.”
“Fine, just give me a call before you get here. I’ll make sure she’s decent.”
“It should be about 1.”
“That should be good.”
I hung-up and cleaned up some, but at 10 I had to feed her again. I got settled on the sofa and for a few minutes Alexander was fine, he was playing with his trucks but then he realized where she was and he came to the love seat.
“No.” He stated.
“Alexander, we’re not doing this again.”
“Baby, no.” he yelled.
Isabella paused kind of confused and I didn’t want to upset her right now.
“Come sit down.”
“No!” he yelled.
I called his full name, which caught his attention quickly but then he just ran to the gate and started crying. I was about to get up when I heard Emily’s voice and she came in carrying him a few minutes later.
“I guess he got a little jealous of you.”
“Yeah, he said no very well.”
“I heard, I woke up when the detective called tried to go back to sleep, knew I had at least two more hours but couldn’t. I did get a good shower and I feel human again.”
She sat down and put him in her lap and he just pouted at me, it was heartbreaking that he didn’t quite understand, but then she got up and moved beside me.
“Baby.” He said.
“She’s your little sister.”
He frowned clearly not happy about that and there wasn’t a whole lot we could do but try to make him feel like he wasn’t being replaced. Isabella was fine to eat for me even though she heard Emily’s voice because she had paused and slightly moved her head.
“Stewart is coming over sometime around 1, wanted to talk.”
“He left me a voicemail, said basically the same thing without a time.”
“I over fixed breakfast so there is a plate in the microwave.”
“Ok, I’ll see if he’ll snack with me.”
She took Alexander with her and maybe that was a good thing for him, to spend some time with her. I texted Casey and asked him to come over about 12:30 so he can watch Alexander while he was here. I let Isabella finish and then changed her and spent some time with her while Emily stayed with Alexander until Casey showed up and then he took over. When the agent did show up Emily had just settled down to feed her again but she had the shawl over her and I didn’t realize how much I appreciated that little gesture until she covered up in the hospital when Robert was there, even though he’d been around her when she fed Alexander. I guess it didn’t bother me but maybe it should have?
“Would you like some water, tea, soda, or anything else?” I asked.
“I brought my drink inside, but thank you.”
We sat down in the living room; Casey took Alexander outside for a bit where an agent was posted anyway.
“How are you doing Mrs. Hanson?”
“Fine, it’s good to be home and to have her here.”
“I’d ask to see her, but I assume you went with breastfeeding?” He asked.
“I did, she’s currently eating, but I am sure she’ll be done before we are.”
He smiled and got out a picture of a young man and laid it down.
“Do you both recognize him?” he asked.
“Yes, he was one of the men there when I was held.” I replied.
“He’s the one I thought shot Alexander, one that came to the studio. He helped me and Robert when they took me, got me out.”
“Yes. We spoke to him at that time and he would only talk to us about that one incident, from the time they went into the studio until we picked him up, he wouldn’t say anything else.”
“Then why are you here now? I mean we don’t know anything about him, I’ve never met him.”
“Well, we tried for several days and he just wouldn’t talk to us. Then Agent Rodriquez remembered that your brother’s spouse, Doctor Nicols, had helped Zac talk about what happened and we gave him a call and asked if he’d be willing. He explained that Ian used concepts of BDSM, we were unaware of that and rest assured he did not say anything about the talk you had, refused when we asked. He said he would come down and talk to him to try.”
It was a relief that Zander had not said anything about what we discussed in our meetings, even more current ones.
“Was he able to help Logan?” Emily asked.
“Yes. Obviously there meetings were taped and Logan was aware of that. Once Mr. Nicols was able to gain his trust and get him to trust him he was very informative.”
We waited to see and Emily adjusted herself and Isabella to get comfortable, Casey came in and got
Alexander’s cup and filled it with water.
“Logan is 28 and he’s been with Ian since he was just about sixteen and a half. He was dating Robert when he met Ian and a few months later Ian picked him up and took him to the white palace, he even calls it that. Once there Ian began to work on him, which honestly wasn’t hard based on what we know about his family. Unlike Zac, no one reported him missing except Robert and the police wouldn’t take him seriously because his mom said he was fine. Added, Logan is not well known in the area.”
“That’s really sad that no one did. How was his home life?” I said.
I couldn’t imagine that being the case with me, it showed my family and friends really cared because they missed me, they knew my being gone wasn’t normal. The fact that no one looked for Logan was heartbreaking.
“Logan’s home life was rather bleak. Parents were known drug users and father was in jail when Ian picked him up. He’s the oldest of three but the younger two were taken by their grandmother right after he vanished. Logan really felt like Ian was looking out for him. Despite the abuse he suffered from Ian, it was also the only time anyone really cared where he was. Robert said there were a few times Logan mentioned family, but it wasn’t much.”
She nodded, checked on Isabella who was still nursing and content for the moment.
“We know there was physical abuse, mental, sexual and he believed Ian cared. Mr. Nicols asked what Logan knew about Zac and if Ian had ever mentioned him and he had quite a bit to say.”
“Like what?” I asked.
“He was there when the two of you met in 2003, he was there as a photographer actually. At the time he wasn’t really obsessed with the band that came when he watched your documentary. He got interested and ultimately it became an obsession and namely with you. Logan said he was told it was your passion for what you do that attracted him. Ian however knew you were pretty unobtainable, because you’re well known around here and you’d be missed. He compensated by looking for boys that resembled you, Logan said that Robert was a contender but Ian didn’t do incest. His obsession with you however did not falter he followed your career and your personal life closely.”
“I figured he did, he knew about Kate my ex-wife and he claimed to have slept with her.” I said.
“Logan said Ian did not like Kate period and well, you know how he feels about your current wife.”
“I’m more than aware of how he feels about her, but he’s going to have to just deal with it.”
He smiled and Emily adjusted again.
“She’s almost done.”
“No rush, my first wife wanted to breastfeed but couldn’t, but my second wife did. I know how exhausting it can be.”
“So, Ian’s been obsessed with me since 2003, what changed? Was it the online post?”
Just the way he looked defeated told me it was not just that post, there had to be something else.
“Logan told Mr. Nicols that Ian did want you there but he knew kidnapping you would be a very big risk and that he wouldn’t get away with it because of who you are. He didn’t think it was possible. Glen was also present and has always been by his side somehow, he saw the ad that Adam posted.”
“Were you able to confirm if they were related?” Emily asked.
“Yes. Glen and Adam are in fact brothers, they have the same parents.”
“How did they get separated?”
“Divorce. Their parents divorced in 1977. Adam was about five and Glen was just two. Dad moved out here and brought Glen with him; mom remarried and kept Adam in Georgia. They were allowed to talk and visited sometimes until Adam was arrested. But Glen saw the post Adam made and knew Ian was obsessed with Zac. Logan was there when they got the ad and said Ian really did not believe Adam had him.”
Emily’s eyes took a glazed look but she checked on Isabella and was fine.
“So, basically Ian may never have known about the ad if Adam hadn’t posted where Glen could see it?” I asked.
“Exactly, he said Ian left to go get you after agreeing to pay a high sum, but Glen was unaware that Ian wasn’t paying anything. Logan was aware of Ian’s financial troubles and he knew Ian did not have that kind of money. Logan was given strict instructions to not say anything about it to Glen. Ian’s plan was to come in, kill Adam and David and take you. He didn’t know Emily was there, but we can probably safely assume he would have killed her too.”
“He said he saw her come out with me, it’s how he knew it was real.”
“Ian came home a few days later without you, told them when he arrived Emily was being wheeled out and you were with her. Glen asked about Adam and Ian told him he was dead and that David was in the hospital.”
“Does Logan know if Glen knew who I was before he ever interviewed?”
He took a sip of his flavored water and sat it down. “Glen knew who you were right after it happened, he did say they were pretty clueless on why Zac would be there and it did take them a year to connect the dots, he went because of you. Otherwise, Adam and David would have never been able too.”
“So when he interviewed with us, he knew who I was. That I was the woman his brother was obsessed with?”
“Yes. Logan wasn’t aware that he interviewed with you guys until he got home. He was apparently furious and irritated, he remembered because it was one of the only times Glen brought a random person there and Ian didn’t complain.”
Both of us looked at him. “Random person?”
“Someone he picked up a bar, Logan said he recalls the screaming. He provided a guide to where this person was buried.”
“He killed him?”
“According to Logan they are both murderers and he provided some burial locations. But admitted he was not present for them all. Logan provided a lot of information that we suspected could be true, but couldn’t prove. The house you were taken too was raided and evidence has been collected from the entire house, likewise we now have three address that we know he was at. The last house Emily was at was Glen’s; the other two were in fake names. Logan provided another address that was in his name, so we’re looking back at the fake names to see if perhaps they were real people maybe ones he killed or ones that are still under him.”
“Did he say if Ian was leaving?”
“Yes. Logan apparently was trusted enough to know. Ian had three tickets one for himself, Logan, and the baby. They were flying to Croatia, which doesn’t have extradition laws with the United States. It’s possible that he’s already left the United States.”
The idea that Ian could have moved and still be obsessed and could basically come after me when he felt like it was a disturbing thought.
“He’s still in the United States. My best guess is a house outside Oklahoma, someplace we don’t know about yet.” Emily said.
“You sound sure about that.”
“He welcomed our newborn, he’s close by but far enough you can’t find him.”
He nodded. “Fair enough. We determined that Glen does indeed have a house in Maine, apparently Glen did better financially than Ian or even Adam, we don’t know exactly why he wouldn’t help Ian unless he’s unaware of his situation.”
“He’s helping, how else would Ian be able to move around?” Emily asked. Her tone of voice said these drops in the story were agitating her.
“What will happen to Logan?” I asked.
“Right now we are not sure, Mr. Nicols is confident that on his own he would have never done anything. It seems Ian lied to him and broke him to a point that he’d do anything he asks, including murder. But it seems that Alexander was the first time he asked and we’re not sure why. He’s been compliant for a very long time.”
“He wasn’t with me, he told me to fake being compliant, told me to basically act as if he’d broken through and got what he wanted. I mean the man is talented but Logan didn’t seem all that afraid.”
“Mr. Nicols is still kind of getting him to talk and he’ll have a psych evaluation done as well. Charges won’t be filed until after that, if the evaluation determines he was present and knew all along the dangers then he’ll be charged accordingly. Right now there more worried about a lawyer claiming mental problems as a result.”
“It makes sense but I would make sure there aware that he could be acting.” I said.
Emily moved and quickly fixed her shirt before handing her to me, I was closer to agent Stewart than she was and it gave him the chance to see her.
“She looks like Zac to me.”
“Everyone else says she’s a carbon copy of me.” Emily said.
“I can see that too. She’s precious. You’ve done a remarkable job with Alexander.”
“We have a lot of help and people who love us and them.”
“Aside from letting you know about your brother’s spouse helping and Mr. Ashford, I came because we tested the box you got at the hospital. The contents inside were confirmed to be yours, the baby blanket was new and still had the tag actually. The blood belonged to an animal; most likely a pig since theirs most closely matches ours. The card was generic and didn’t have any prints on it, handwriting analyzes shows it to be Ian’s.”
“What about the snow globes and other items?”
“Most were carefully packaged and mailed so that the only prints were those of the mail carriers, which were all investigated and confirmed to not have contact with them. The snow globes were made by someone but we cannot find the person, all of the parts were clean so they use gloves or something to ensure they remain unknown. We did trace the vibrating underwear to a local novelty shop and they confirmed that Glen made the purchase, paid cash.”
“So basically all dead ends?” Emily asked.
“Pretty much, we’re going to leave the security detail because we do feel with the current threat to your newborn that he may still make some attempt. The FBI isn’t sponsoring two to Australia but you covered that with your sister, we will watch family members as well to make sure he doesn’t try to use them.”
“Thank you.” We said.
“Do you have any questions?”
“None that I can think of right now, we will certainly call you if we do.” I said.
Emily actually let him out and then we went out back where Alexander was playing with Casey. I sat with her in the shade and Emily got out there with them, I did manage some pictures of them. Yet,
Alexander noticed I had her with me and I really didn’t have an answer for this, when Casey took her he completely lost it.
“Hardcore jealously for Uncle Asey.” He said.
“Totally…” I said.
Emily had taken her inside and he was in his lap, but she came to the door with his cup and he went inside with her.
“I need Taylor…surely Ezra was pissed off and jealous.”
“You need your momma Zac, she had seven and I am sure she’ll know something.”
“Well, according to Mom none of us were like that. A few days sure but Isaac was use to it by the time I arrived and so on.”
“Hey babe, you two doing dinner?” Emily asked.
“Yeah, why?”
“I’m going to lay Mr. Whiney down, he hasn’t napped today and I think I may lay with him. I’ll bring her with me and lay her in the crib.”
“Sure that’s wise?” I asked.
“Can’t be that bad Zac, he’ll be with me she’ll be in the crib.”
“If you need assistance then call me.”
“I will. You two chat without jealous toddlers and screaming newborns.”
We both giggled as she went back inside and we considered methods that could help him, from splitting time to letting him interact with her more, about 4:45 we went inside and the house was very quiet.
“I’m going to run up-stairs and check on them, want to get whatever out of the fridge? I planned chicken tonight.”
“I’ll get it and find something to do with it.”
I stepped over the gate and went up-stairs, I expected Alexander to be in his room but he wasn’t so I crossed the hall to ours, carefully opening the door. I could see Emily laying in the bed, could even see Alexander beside her, but Isabella wasn’t in the crib.
I gently walked over and found she was laying between Emily and Alexander, sound asleep covered up and his hand was over her, almost protective like. I couldn’t resist the picture but I found Emily to actually be awake.
“Were you afraid he’d hit her?” I asked.
“No. She woke up about an hour after laying her down, woke him up too. He seemed a bit irritated but I let him help me with the diaper change.”
“Let him help? How?” I asked.
“He got the items for me, even though I had her diaper he brought me one, good thing he needed to be changed too. But like he handed me the wipes and he handed me the powder.”
“Then he what? Just laid down with her?”
“Yeah, he actually kind of rubbed her belly until they were asleep.”
“Let’s hope this sweet big brother last.”
She smiled and eased her way up. “But I hate to wake him up; he’s been asleep about thirty minutes.”
“It’s close to dinner for them both.”
“Yeah.”
Granted, he was not happy about being woken up, if he slept too long he’d never go to bed tonight though. He played some while Casey and I cooked but I was confused on why she fixed a bottle for Isabella when she was the one feeding her. I heard Alexander though when she sat down to feed her and sighed, but then he stopped whining and it got quiet.
“Maybe he’s use to her feeding the baby?” Casey asked.
I didn’t quite believe that so I walked in to see if she’d distracted him and I found him sitting beside her, holding Isabella and holding the bottle. I just stood there confused, eventually Casey came in and he was the one with the ability to get pictures.
“Am I in the twilight zone?”
Emily giggled. “No.”
“What…? How…? Why?”
“I don’t think he’s jealous Zac, I think he wants to help but he can’t quite tell us that yet. Granted, it could be a bit of jealously also especially with you and Casey, but he whined when I sat down so I figured why not try it. Maybe he just wants to know he can, I know we can’t always let him.”
“It could be handy when you’re traveling, he can hold the bottles for her.” Casey said.
“Haha, not funny Casey.”
Given he was content and quiet and they were fine we finished dinner, Emily did take over about half through, he couldn’t hold her for long periods but she let him help hold the bottle, which was really her at that point. She let him rub her back when she needed to be burped too and he seemed perfectly fine. I remembered that Natalie had said Ezra wanted to help too and Penny was mommy’s helper for sure, so maybe that was the answer. We had dinner and when her next feeding came time I fed her and let him help, he was fine.
“I can settle the jealously issue with the twins, but you have the magic touch when it comes to our own kids?”
“Just a hunch really, when I went to change her he kept trying to move clothes or blankets and when
I stopped him he got irritated. So, I figured why not let him do something, see if that averted him and it did. I know we can’t let him every single time but it’s new and she’s new, he just wants to know he can.”
I grinned widely. “You called my mother didn’t you?”
She smiled. “Damn Skippy! He pitched a holy hell fit when I tried to change her so I called my mother. I asked her if any of you did that and ironically it was you and Taylor. She said Taylor was very jealous but was fine after he got to help her a bit, you were the same way.”
“Cheater.” Casey said.
I blinked; Emily had never referred to my mom in that way; generally it was Mrs. Hanson or Diana if it was me.
“What?” She asked.
“Just never heard you call my mom that, you referred to her as my mother, you’ve never done that before even though Natalie and Nikki sometimes do. You never have.”
“I called her that earlier too, kind of stunned her but then again I was on the verge of tears and I had two kids that were about to start screaming bloody murder and I wanted to do something beside call in reinforcements. Considering that once we’re back working I may not have that ability. I wanted my mother and she’s the closest thing to one I have, so I called her.”
“You could have called for reinforcements. I am sure we don’t mind.” Casey said.
“But sometimes you just have to know they’ll be there, know you can reach out and be able to connect and have them. I wouldn’t have called Mom so you made the right choice.”
“Of course, I’m me, I don’t make bad choices.”
“Since it’s just the three of us…did you get your birthday spanking as well Emily?”
“No. It’ll be really delayed. Damn Casey she’s not some deprived person who must have pain to get off. She just had a baby in case you didn’t know. Cutest little girl in the world.”
“She had him on your birthday and you didn’t get skipped.”
Emily snorted. “He didn’t HAVE Alexander Casey. Still hurts me to move sometimes, there was no way I’d even let him right now. Not until I’m cleared by Dr. O’Brian. I’m not that much into pain.”
He giggled. “I figured you didn’t, but assume when you’re feeling more like you he’ll make good on it.”
She smiled and I was certain at some point in the future I would, but I wasn’t about to do anything that would hurt her, a spanking now would. Casey left about 8:45 and headed home and we both laid
Alexander down tonight and she did her normal pre-bedtime pump and feeding session with Isabella.
The extra milk that Alexander had left had been throw away a month after he was done, it wouldn’t have lasted until she arrived so she was trying to build up again and have some for the plane ride to Australia. She let me handle the diaper change and clean clothes for the night while she stored the milk, I laid her down in her crib and made sure she was comfortable; when Emily was back we went to bed.
