Infinity Chapter 117 - Rescue

POV: Emily / Eliza
Word count: 3427
Thursday, May 21, 2014
Eliza was good at keeping me company, trying to keep me from thinking about the fact I’d never be going home. We were locked in the basement, there was no way for us to get out. Eliza had tried everything she could think of to get us out of the basement, the doors were locked from the outside. How Glen was getting out was beyond us, but she’d searched his pockets for a key or code or anything and nothing. The best guess was there was indeed a code used to open the door, because he was dead we had no way to even guess the codes length or the actual numbers.
I however wasn’t so certain he was dead, so when she fell asleep I dealt with the pain and got up. She kept telling me he was dead, but I had to know for myself. Walking through this room and into the dungeon hurt, each step reminded me of how many times he’d hit me. It also aggravated the cuts he had inflicted. I paused where the glass use to be and could see him in the same spot. I could tell that his clothes were
now dirty, the smell gave it away. Still, I had to know.
I carefully walked across the room and felt for a pulse myself, feeling queasy from the smell. His skin was cold to touch and there was no reaction when my fingers pressed against his neck. I didn’t feel anything, didn’t notice any breathing motions either. He was dead and he could no longer terrorize me. I stood there in the dark for several minutes. He couldn’t hurt me. He couldn’t take my daughter and hurt her. He couldn’t do anymore damage.
I turned to return to the room I was going to die in, I was sure of that. But, in the dark I couldn’t see where my feet were stepping and I felt something roll out from under my foot moments before I fell. Based on shape and the vibrations, I’d just stepped on a vibrator. The pain exploded in the back of my head along with every other part of my body.
Fucking hell, a vibrator was going to kill me?! I’d survived David, Adam, Ian and now Glen and my ultimate death was a stupid vibrator?! I could feel the fuzzy feeling of being close to passing out but I still heard the explosion, saw tiny bits of wood fly over my head. I could hear Eliza screaming my name and I barely saw her coming through the window when I closed my eyes.
It was those damn smelly salts that caused me to open my eyes but something was wrong. It was too bright, too fresh smelling. When I opened my eyes it was not Eliza looking at me, it was Ryan. He was in a paramedic’s uniform and he looked totally concerned and worried.
“Emily? Can you hear me?”
A quick glance revealed I was out of the basement, I was in an ambulance,a tight enclosed space with him and another female paramedic who had the salts. Was this another dream? Was this another moment like with Maddi? I didn’t have the same calming feelings I had with Maddi or my mom though, but it could still be a dream.
“Ryan? What…”
The smelly salts weren’t enough to keep me there with him, I just closed my eyes wanting to wake up. I didn’t feel or remember the ride to the hospital but the next salts were much stronger and this time it was Max and Ryan looking at me, concern and shock written on their features. I could feel Max rubbing something on my arm, cold liquid followed by the distinct prick of a needle.
“Emily? Can you hear me?” Ryan asked.
I nodded and Max looked up at me and smiled a bit. “Hey sunshine, I wanted a visit but not this way.”
Despite having familiar faces all around me I was so confused. Why was Max here? Why was Ryan here? Cody was standing in the corner of the room, the same worried and concerned expression. What the hell was going on?
“Ems, hey, calm down.” Max said.
I clearly had to be dead to be seeing them all, I didn’t want to be dead! I wanted to live because Alexander and Isabella needed me! I wanted to be there when they lost their first teeth, for their first crush and their first broken hearts. I didn’t want to die in some jackasses basement dungeon! I tried to get up, I had to find Maddi! She could tell me how to come back, how to live.
“Emily calm down! You’re at Maysville Memorial hospital.” Max said.
It did nothing to calm me down, I needed to get out of here! I had to find Maddi and I had to live. I was getting to a point where I couldn’t breathe anymore and wait, why did Max’s hands feel so warm? I saw the needle before he sunk it into my leg, fuck that hurt but the pain is what made me realize I wasn’t dead yet. It really didn’t take long for the shot to take effect, before long I felt sleepy and groggy and Max laid me back.
“You are alive Emily and you’re ok.”
The last thing I saw was Cody making a phone call. He looked worried but I was just glad he was calling someone.
-Eliza-
I heard the crashing noise as she fell and it startled me away, I was almost to her when the loud explosions rocked the house and pieces of wood and debris were thrown across the room. Had she been hit? I shoved a piece of plywood out of the way and dropped beside her. There was a lot of blood on the floor..wait…I could see the floor! The explosions had knocked a large chuck of the wall down, revealing a window, which was broke and fresh pure air flooded into the room.
“Emily?” I asked.
She wasn’t responding and her eyes were closed but she was breathing fine and her heart rate was fine. There was a loud banging noise and before long the door swung open and police and FBI agents swarmed the building. Guns drawn and shouting for everyone to freeze I just sat where I was, my fingers making sure her heart was beating. They swept the room and one particular person came right to us and kneeled down on her side.
“Is she alive?”
“She is, she fell I guess and I heard her fall. Heart rate and breathing are steady.”
“You must be Eliza then?”
“I am, who are you?”
“Officer Cody Jenkins, Maysville police. I’m Maddi’s husband.”
“Maddi?”
He ignored my question instead he radioed for paramedics and they were coming in not even a minute later! Damn they worked fast here, yet there was another man that seemed to know her as well because he was being gentle and the way he said her name said he cared about her. I was perfectly fine with that scenario! It meant they’d make damn sure she was taken care of.
“Ryan is Max working today?” Officer Jenkins asked.
“He is and I’ve already alerted him that she maybe here, he’s waiting on her. I know she’ll feel comfortable with him.”
“You..I..what the hell?” I asked.
Officer Jenkins got my hand and smiled. “Emily is in good hands Eliza. Maddi is my wife and she told me where you were, she said your mother showed her and Riley. This is Ryan and Emily knows him as well. Max, the man we’ll take her too is Casey’s ex. Do you need an ambulance also?”
“I feel…ok..But I know I need to be checked over.”
“She needs to go now, her head is bleeding and she looks pale.” Ryan said.
“Take her first, he hurt her more. I’ll be fine.”
He nodded and before long she was being taken out to a waiting ambulance. I was there when officers declared that Glen was dead, I was certain that Emily came in here to confirm that. Officer Jenkins rode with me to the hospital, leaving me in the hands of a few nurses he went to check on her. He returned to the room about thirty minutes after he left.
“I called my wife and told her you both were here. I need to call Zac and tell him.”
“Do you mind if I do that? He trusted me to keep her safe and I let him down, the least I could do is let him know she’s ok.”
“I don’t see why you can’t.”
He handed me his phone and the nurses stepped out so I could have privacy, Officer Jenkins stayed though. I was actually glad he stayed because I wasn’t sure how this conversation was going to go. Zac’s name was already pulled up and I just selected his cell phone and hit dial. I listened as his phone rang, and rang, and rang and finally Casey picked up.
“Hey Cody, what is it?”
“It’s not Cody, where is Zachary?”
Yet, I could hear both of their children screaming bloody murder in the background, I couldn’t be sure but I had heard they did that the last two times either of them were missing. Isabella had never been away from Emily this long, she sounded the loudest.
“Eliza?” he asked.
“Give him the phone Casey. He will want to hear what I have to say.”
Moments passed before Zac’s tired, stressed, and hurting voice said hello. It was clear they were not doing well without her, the kids were screaming but not even Zac sounded like he was handling anything well right now.
“Zac?” I asked.
“Eliza? How did you…”
“I’m at Maysville Memorial, I’m sure you know where that is. Emily is here with me, she’s alive Zac and she is going to want you. Someone named Ryan and Max have her here?”
I heard another phone ringing which Casey answered and I heard the name Max, my assumption was Max was calling Casey to let him know.
“She’s ok?” he asked.
I sighed. “No Zac, he hurt her pretty badly. But he’s dead and he’ll never hurt her again. He didn’t use anything he mailed to her but I am sure Max can tell you more about how she is. I just heard Casey say his name.”
“I’ll be there as soon as I can be.”
“Understandable.”
I hung-up, knowing he wanted to talk to Max because I couldn’t tell him how his wife was, I could only tell him she was hurt and alive.
“Max called Casey, I heard Casey in the background.”
He nodded. “He said he was. Max had to sedate her she was freaking out. I think she believed she was dead or something, she was mumbling something about finding Maddi so she could save her. I’m going to step out and let the nurses and doctor’s check you very well. The local sheriff let the FBI take over, which is fine we were working with them already and since there involved with Emily’s case it was better. They’ll want to speak to you.”
I nodded and he walked out. Nurses checked me over, tended to a few of the cuts and bruises from the fight and then Agent Rodriquez and Stewart came in and I told them everything I remembered. They asked a thousand questions before they left me alone in the room. The doctor’s were waiting on my blood work, making sure it was fine. They had already treated the few minor items, I was just left there. About an hour and a half passed before there a soft knock, I said to come in and the first thing I seen was a very pregnant belly and then the bright red hair. I knew this was Maddi, I had seen her around but hadn’t been formally introduced.
“Hello Eliza, I am Maddi Jenkins.”
“I know who you are. I’ve seen you around but we haven’t been introduced formally.”
She smiled. “Max is not letting be back to see Emily, my threats didn’t even work. Apparently her condition isn’t good.”
“He hurt her pretty badly, lot’s of hits with a flogger and I am sure he cut her too. I’m sure she’ll be alright.”
“Thank you.” She said.
“For what? I haven’t done anything.”
“You saved her life, didn’t you? She came to me yesterday Eliza and the only way she could have was for her to be dead already. If she was and you were the only person there, then you saved her life.”
I nodded. “Yes, she did die for a few minutes. He had me down and went back to her. I couldn’t let her stay gone though, Zac would kill me.”
“She came to me and I was so worried, but she faded so quickly I wondered. Thank you.”
“I should be thanking you actually. Cody said you gave him our location?”
“I did. Apparently my daughter Riley has the same gift as I do. She was talking to your mother and she used a stuffed kangaroo that Emily brought for her second birthday. She used it to convey the message to me in a vision. I know it seems hard to believe, even Emily had issues at first.”
I smiled. “You aren’t the first person that I have known with such unique gifts. Trust me Mrs. Jenkins, I do not find that weird or hard to believe. By chance was the Kangaroo from the zoo?”
“Yes. It’s one of her favorite stuffed animals.”
“Emily and I picked it out, she said she was getting things for her birthday and she asked me to chose a Kangaroo. We both liked the one from the zoo.”
She smiled. “It explains why her mother was so able to use it. I am shocked that you were both here in town.”
“Where is town exactly?”
“Maysville, it’s three hours from Tulsa and where I live. I’m just glad Cody knew the location by my description.”
“Me too.”
An unfamiliar man came in and Maddi smiled at him and then punched his arm very hard.
“You better tell me how she is or I will unleash every pregnancy hormone I have on you.”
He rubbed his arm. “I’m sorry Maddi, I am at work and I had to get Zac’s permission to tell anyone what is going on. I talked to him a few minutes ago and he told me I could only talk to the two of you. He should be here very soon. We did an MRI and no swelling is present, we will do another one just to be sure. The head wound was a free bleeder but we got it stopped and she is sedated because when she came too here she freaked out, I think she was under the impression she had died again. She kept asking for you Maddi, saying you could help her.”
Maddi frowned and so did I. It didn’t sound like she was doing well with the head wound or that she was mentally comprehending that she was not dead.
“She’ll be ok right?” I asked.
“Yes.” He said.
He didn’t say anything else after that even though Maddi gave him her best tell me look, clearly that was all Zac said he could say.
“Can we see her? Can we at least sit with her until Zac arrives?”
“No. Maddi, she’s in the ICU unit and only Zac can go back, Eliza hasn’t been completely cleared by the FBI yet, sorry Eliza.”
“I figured it would take them time to clear me.”
“ICU? You just said she was fine!”
“She seemed confused and disoriented even before she arrived here, we are concerned about the head wound. It’s better that we monitor her carefully, in addition she had a bit of a reaction to the first sedative we gave her. So, we’re concerned about that. She is fine, she’s there more for caution than anything else. But because she is then I can’t let anyone back.”
Neither of us were happy about that news either! ICU wasn’t usually used for just cautionary purposes, so her reaction must have been bad. He left the room and she sat down, clearly waiting for her husband. It gave us time to talk though because she was a close friend of Emily’s. We talked about her pregnancy, she was having twins and it showed. Seeing her with kids and Emily made me wonder if I would ever have my own. They released me about 9:30 that night but I wasn’t leaving the hospital until I saw her. So I went to the waiting room, I assumed Zac was already here or would come through here.
-Emily-
I had no idea how long I had been out, I woke up with the sounds of the heart monitor beeping and different machines. I knew that I’d been changed, I could feel the gown laying over me and the blankets too. I opened my eyes and the first pair of eyes I saw were Zac’s, just staring at me. His eyes were red and puffy and it looked like he hadn’t slept for days. There were even fresh tears on his cheeks. I felt his fingers on my cheek and leaned my head into the touch, he felt warm and safe. I wanted to get in his lap and never leave that safe spot, but I felt so sleepy still.
“Max said the sedative should wear off soon.”
“I’m here?” I asked.
His fingers moved across my cheek again. “Yes baby you’re here with me, where you going to stay.”
His lips grazed my cheek, warm and comforting. It took another hour to wake up good and get the groggy feeling to go away.
“Where is Alexander and Isabella?”
“There with Maddi and Casey, he wanted to stay but they wouldn’t let us all back. Besides you have a lot of wires hooked up and I didn’t think
Alexander needed to see that just yet. They’ve both been quite hard to handle and not being able to reach you would have just made him worse. I’ll have Casey bring them as soon as you tell me though.”
I wanted to see them but it was late and he was right, the number of wires connected to me was in fact alarming, so it was probably best they stay with them right now.
“I do want to see them but you are right, why are there so many wires?”
“Heart, breathing, making sure your blood pressure is stable. Apparently your allergic to the sedative you were given and kind of terrified them
when you crashed. The head wound didn’t help.”
I didn’t even remember any of that. “How were they?”
“Uh…let’s just say you leaving for days will never happen again. I thought it was bad with just him but with them both it’s horrible. He starts wanting you and leads to a meltdown and that sends her into one. Which by the way her temper is much worse than his. I had to call Casey because I just couldn’t handle them both. Neither would sit with me they just screamed and cried. Poor Taylor got a drum stick straight to the crotch, he was not happy.”
“I guess not. It might be better they not come up tonight then. I don’t plan to go anywhere.”
“I am hoping that with Riley there they won’t miss either of us.”
“Let’s hope.”
I still felt groggy and with him sitting here I felt safe, but it wasn’t what I wanted. I guess after so long you just know because he changed from the jeans and t-shirt into his sleeping pants, bright neon green ones that Casey had gifted him on Christmas and he then pulled the cover back and laid down beside me gently. Unorthodox it was, but it’s exactly what I wanted, I curled up the best I could to him. It was the first time since Saturday night that I felt totally safe, despite the pain. Even that seemed to fade away as I felt his arm around me.
“I think this is what we both need right now anyway. There safe with Maddi, Cody, and Casey.”
I put my IV hand on his chest and before long I was asleep.
