Chapter 131 –  Fainting

POV:  Emily

Word count:  4912

June 12, 2016: Sunday

Hanson Day had gone very well with no problems or glitches of any kind, it was nice to have a good weekend where no one ended up kidnapped or tortured or anything bad. I was pleased and so was the band. The second year of the Moey’s produced hilarious and creative things.

Declan and Dakota’s first birthday had gone well too, we’d gone down for the weekend but I didn’t inform Maddi of the current pregnancy yet, I wanted to be more sure and the sonogram had been scheduled later because of the dates.

The studio was now back to normal. The offices were all set up, the storage rooms were set up and organized, and the new employee area was set up. It made working much easier and the new office set up was great to watch Alexander and Isabella, but my mind was slightly distracted on having three of them here. We still had not told anyone about this one.

“Earth to Emily…Come in Emily…” Zac said.

“Huh?”

“Babe, Alexander has called for mama for five minutes, clearly he wants you to come watch. Are you ok?”

“Yeah, just thinking probably shouldn’t do that much.”

He smiled and kissed my forehead, I got up and went to where Alexander was playing with his toys and sat down. What he wanted to show me was his awesome ability to stack the blocks taller than he was and then knock them all down quickly, it seemed trivial to some but to him it was a major achievement.

“So, what time are we due at the church today?”

“Two with a small reception to follow.”

He smiled and sat down with her, it was still really early so we had plenty of time to get ready and make it by two. Amanda and Sean had elected to get married, they didn’t want anything huge so it was a small church wedding where they’d been going.  They didn’t want the child to be born out of wedlock and after talking they’d decided this was the best course of action. I approved of their decision because it was their choice and not mine or anyone else. I watched our two children interact and smiled.

Alexander was helping Isabella stack her blocks and she then knocked them down, he was also identifying colors very well now, often telling her. She was talking a little more as well, but still not as much as him. When she wanted to be pushed he was the good big brother and pushed her around the living room on her little push toys.

“You seem very quiet on baby number three. Not like you really.” Zac said.

“Still kind of in shock really, didn’t expect this one. Then again, we didn’t expect either of them.”

“I know we decided to wait but maybe this is better Ems, she’ll at least be over two and we’re stable. So, I don’t see where we
should have a problem with having three.”

I rolled the ball back to Alexander when he pushed it to me. “I know we’re stable and all it’s just…”

I really had no idea how to bring the subject up, I had considered it multiple times already and with the prospect of another baby along the way and then both of them with no additional help, I wasn’t sure how I would handle three of them. I hadn’t even told Doctor Lints about the baby or what was on my mind.

“But what? Something is up Ems.”

“I don’t think I can take care of three kids and do my job at the same time. I didn’t think I could when she came but it’s been tricky and stressful but you guys were available if I needed you. You’re now talking about a new album and that means you will all be spending days and nights in the studio writing, demoing, and recording. I just…”

He slid over and put his arms around me. “Just because we’re doing a new album doesn’t mean I won’t be available Emily. You do have Sean there as well, he’s been doing a fantastic job with helping when we did construction and he knows a lot of what we need done too.”

“I don’t know, I just feel like I can’t handle a new born plus those two running around and then people calling, e-mails, and everything.”

He pulled me close and kissed my forehead. “We can discuss this at length both as a couple and as business when we’re a little farther along. No one else knows right now, they may have some ideas.”

“Maybe, I just don’t want to be some home wife all the time.”

“You think I’d care if you were? It’s not like you’ve just been here all the time.”

“I know you wouldn’t care, but I would. I’ve taken care of myself since I was 16 Zac, the idea of giving that up totally is just scary
and I don’t know if I can.”

“You did because you had too and wanted too. All I care about is that you are happy and the kids are happy. If that means you keeping them home then I’m ok with that. If you want to keep working we can figure something out.”

“I know, I guess just with this being unexpected and really? Three kids under four.”

He giggled. “I’m fine with that. Least they’ll be close like my brothers and sisters were, that’s a plus.”

“Let’s hope that’s a plus!”

We gave them lunch about 11:30, making sure they wouldn’t be hungry and ill at the wedding. After that we took turns getting ready. Zac took Alexander up first to wash him off and change his clothes. He went with black pants and the pink shirt Casey had gotten.

“Really Zac? Pink shirt?”

Then I saw our son in his black shorts and pink shirt that matched very closely to the one he had on.

“He will hate you forever for this one day.”

“Naa, I’ve got her dress with me little pale yellow sundress with a matching diaper cover and her white sandals.”

“Sure you don’t want me to get her ready?”

“I’m sure, you have more to primp and fix than I do, they shouldn’t be hard to keep clean.”

He wasn’t lying there so I left him with them and went up-stairs. We’d showered last night so I fixed my hair, pulling just some of the sides back and then I went to the closet, but every dress I chose was so tight. I wasn’t even that far! I tried on about fifteen different dresses and I was on the verge of ruining the make up with tears when Zac came in.

“Baby? Are you ok up here? It’s been a long time even for you.”

“I can’t find anything that fits.”

“What do you mean?”

“There all very tight across my mid-section, some I can’t even zip.”

Just by the look on his face I knew he’d noticed something also and just hadn’t said anything.

“Zac.”

“I noticed Friday the shirt you put on was rather tight, but I mean you are pregnant so you will gain weight. It’s not bad and it’s why I didn’t say anything because weight gain is normal.”

“Seriously? I’m already showing that much?”

“Well, it’s not showing it just looks like you gained a few pounds that settled right in your abdomen.”

Curious I went to the bathroom and was alarmed that I’d gained about ten pounds already. I didn’t want too but I had to wear one of the stretched banded skirts and a button up shirt, it was all that really didn’t emphasize the weight gain and that actually fit. It wasn’t ideal, but it worked.

We made it shockingly on time and found our seats among his family and hers. They chose not to have a wedding party or anything fancy. I mean, she’d showed me her dress which was very simple and elegant. The church was quite small and quaint and I understood why she liked it. There décor was also kept simple, the colors were yellow and white, because they both liked sunflowers and there was thousands of them here. Sean looked so dashing in his tuxedo. She used the traditional wedding march and when she came down with her father she looked happy. She was barely showing, but most everyone here knew she was expecting. I was pleasantly shocked that both of our normally wild and hyper kids sat through the service quietly, Alexander only pointed once and Zac quickly acknowledged him and he was quiet. He wanted to point out Sean, because he was use to seeing him.

The ceremony was fairly quick and then we moved to the reception area which was outside. There was some little snacks and drinks and then they joined us after pictures.

“I’m glad you made it.” She said.

“Where else would I be?”

She picked Isabella up. “I love this dress.”

“Mine was going to be the same color but at last, I wouldn’t get it snap or close.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, I’ve packed on ten pounds in like two weeks, I didn’t gain that quick with them. But, maybe it’s partially stress too.”

“It could be.”

“You look pretty in your dress, love the simplicity of it.”

“I didn’t search long and hard, we wanted something simple and clean looking. I found it at the shop when I went there to get information and ended up buying it.”

I giggled. “Sounds good. Are you guys still choosing to take time now?”

“Yes. We both put in for some leave time. I think he did two weeks with you?”

“He did and he was approved, they’re not doing much and I can handle two weeks without him.”

She smiled and I took her so Amanda could move around. It was nice to be around different people and her parents got to see Alexander and Isabella for the first time and they were amazed at how long it had been. Amanda’s parents had handles the photographer, I recommended Maddi because I knew any photos of Alexander and Isabella would kept private, but her parents had chosen someone else. I really wanted to argue but Zac had calmed me down, reminding me that eventually people would see them. I still wished Maddi had been the one here. Dinner was served at 4 and it was delicious, but it seemed everything tasted that way to me now. Isabella frowned upon her plate but after some coaxing she did eat most of it. Alexander, true to his father’s nature, cleared his plate. We stayed for the remainder of the reception as well. I managed to get Zac onto the dance floor for a little bit!

“Did I just get conned into slow dancing in a crowd?” he asked.

He did that as his arms came around me and pulled me close, clearly he didn’t mind being conned into dancing.

“You did actually.”

“I knew I should have ran like crazy.”

“Come on you love to dance when we’re alone. You do realize that that last little stripper dance on the pole could very well be
the cause of number three?”

“Why is it always my fault when you get pregnant?”

“It just is, there is no rhyme or reason. Besides, I can’t get pregnant on my own, I need your help.”

“You feeling ok?”

“Yeah. I stepped inside when I got warm, I felt a bit sick. I cooled off and then came out and conned you into dancing.”

“Please Ems don’t pull a Alexander pregnancy on me, I cannot handle that.”

“It was just being too warm. This feels kind of nice though.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I know that Isabella is with Amanda and Alexander is with Craig and Christopher, but I’m not freaking out because I know
they’re going to be ok. I’m not terrified. It’s a nice feeling.”

He smiled at me. “It is a nice feeling, when is your next appointment?”

“The last day of the month, they wanted to do a bit sooner but at that date they can do a sonogram to make sure things are ok. So, we extended it a bit. Are you coming?”

“Of course I am. I attended all of Alexander and Isabella’s, I intend to attend all this ones.”

Before the end of the song both of our children were with us and they were trying to dance too, it was cute. About 9:30 we headed out with congratulations and well wishes, got the children home and then in bed kind of early, because we did have a busy week coming up. Alexander was a little bit harder to get to sleep but eventually he gave up too and we went to bed right after them.

June 30, 2016

I was honestly glad that Sean was back at work now because I forgot how intense it was to always need to run up and down those steps and manage to keep the two wild ones from going insane in the warehouse. He seemed to have a very good grasp about the business and the process in which we use, he’d even reorganized the warehouse when we shifted it again to be more efficient. The abundant numbers of wrong orders or double shipped had dropped as well, he may not have been aware but I was watching that too. Likewise, when I’d done inventory it was one of the best we’d had.

“Emily?” he asked.

I looked up from the desk and smiled. “What can I do for you?”

“I needed to speak to you, is it ok to come in?”

“Sure, just be sure to lock the door because Alexander has learned how to open doors.”

He came in and relocked it, even checked it and then sat down in the extra seat. My desk was now an L shaped, but the jutted part was now in the center so I could sit at the desk and see them or look to my left to see the floor, I had thought about a U shaped, but it interrupted my ability to get up and get to one of them quickly.

“So, what’s up?”

“Henry turned in his two week notice and the two ladies that we have aren’t going to make it. I know you do the hiring and I went through some of the available applications, Taylor kind of gave me access but I didn’t want to step on toes.”

I smiled and giggled. “Taylor had to call me for those access codes, so I know you had access to the available applications. Did you find some good prospects?”

“Yes.”

He laid four files in front of me, two men and two women.

“I’ve reviewed prior work history and they have really good work history, two would be part time during high events like Christmas, Hop Jam, Hanson Day or just really busy periods, as they have full time jobs already. The other two would be full time employees, here weekly and I think I can assist more as well, because really sometime I feel like I don’t do enough.”

“You do plenty Sean. Backgrounds done?”

“I couldn’t run them.”

“Sean!” Alexander called and was over by him quickly.

“Hey little man, what are you doing?”

While he entertained him for a moment I went ahead and ran the backgrounds and even set him up a password, I would always have overriding access and I would be notified when and who he ran them on. He had Alexander in his lap when I turned back and he was happy. Isabella was playing with the blocks near the couch and she was content to sit there and play. Blocks seemed to be her utmost favorite toys.

“Ok, backgrounds are sent and you’ll get an e-mail also here is your own password for the system. I will get notifications on any background you do, so don’t think you can run mine or Zac’s.”

“Aww shucks, I was just thinking I should do that!”

Alexander looked up at him. “Mama haing baby.”

I blinked because he hadn’t said that to anyone else but Zac and Sean looked a little confused at him and then me, seeing as he’d seen me at Dr. O’Brian’s office not too long ago.

“Something we should know about?” He asked.

I sighed. “We haven’t told anyone yet but Amanda does know. I asked her not to say anything. She and I took them at the same time when she came in worried.”

“She told me you two had taken them but didn’t say yours was positive too, then again, I don’t remember anything after mine was positive, we’re pregnant..”

“I didn’t expect that positive so I asked her to not tell anyone for a bit, I had Alexander tell Zac, you’re the only other person he’s told which is odd.”

“I feel special. I won’t say anything though, I did have a slight clue when we saw you and Zac at the doctor’s office. I mean, I know women have yearly exams but husband don’t usually go to those.”

“Uh, Zac’s gone to a few but generally he waits in the waiting room.”

“Yeah. How far are you?”

“Eleven weeks, appointment today to check on the little one and make sure things are ok. Assuming they are we will probably tell everyone over the weekend or at best, Isabella’s birthday party.”

He giggled. “Perfect timing actually. So, if they come back?”

“I will trust your hiring abilities and as long as the backgrounds come back okay then it should be fine. Any backgrounds you have questions on, please come ask.”

“Not a problem. Alright little man, I gotta get back to work.”

“Mama, he stay?” Alexander asked.

“Sean needs to get back to work. How about when Mama and Dada go to the doctor we let him come up and play?”

“Okay.”

He hopped down and went back to the play area, choosing a truck to push around and ram into walls.

“That was easy.”

“Appointments at 1 and I think Isaac and Taylor are sitting with them. Zac told them some lame reason why I needed to see a doctor.”

“He told them it was a yearly exam, I heard him when they asked if you were ok.”

“Dear god, that boy.”

He giggled and then returned downstairs. I finished what I was working on and about 12 Zac and Casey came up with their lunch. He sat down with them and Zac informed me there was a change in plans.

“How is Katrina?”

“She’s doing great, her appointment was canceled so she goes tomorrow to have a sonogram. Her appointment is at 3 and both of us are going. So don’t expect me to be here.”

“You better go, do not make me get you both with paddles, you need to be involved and be there.”

“Believe me we are! Hey, why is Zac going with you to a yearly. You just had one in May, is everything ok?”

Son of a bitch! Taylor and Isaac wouldn’t question it, but Casey would! “Yeah, the doctor said my sample was contaminated and they just wanted to run another one. Nothing major.”

“Ok. Well, tell them no scaring us!”

I smiled and we left, I punched his arm once we were in the car. “You could have told them it was your appointment and not mine.”

“I didn’t think about it! It was the first thing that came to mind. I knew Taylor and Isaac wouldn’t question anything.”

“Well, they’ll know soon anyway.”

He drove us to the office and we made it with 5 minutes to spare! I signed in and we had to wait for 30 minutes before the nurse called us back. Once back they did the routine checks such as drawing blood, getting the urine sample, and checking my weight. I was rather alarmed that I was up 20 pounds and I didn’t understand, at this rate I wouldn’t have to tell anyone, they would just guess or assume I was just getting fat. Yet, the nurse also seemed alarmed at the weight gain. Once she had her samples she escorted us to the private room. Dr. O’Brian came in a few minutes later and looked at the papers, quietly for what felt like forever.

“Have you changed your eating habits?”

“Not really, I am eating a little more than normal but not like two whole meals on the side. I hope this is not some other crazy ass side effect.”

He giggled and smiled some. “No high stress right now right?”

“Right. Sean’s been doing more at the studio and I’ve been basically verifying and watching our other two.”

He checked my blood pressure which was slightly elevated but not too bad, he checked my lungs to make that I was breathing fine. Zac was still iffy with some aspects of the exam, but he did well through this one as well. Yet, he seemed concerned by the rapid weight gain, I was sure both of us were trying to not think of the possible bad things that could be happening. He got the fetal heartbeat monitor and it was something that Zac and I both were looking forward too. However, the sound we heard was nor normal, it sounded exceptionally fast to us both. It was also very inconsistent and that worried me, because that could mean there was a problem with the heart or with development. Could there be something wrong with our baby?

Doctor O’Brian seemed as puzzled as we were and he kept moving it around and I guess he was seeking a normal rhythm but it never came, it continued to sound weird and it never sounded like normal. His face was telling me that something was wrong.

He shook his head. “We’re doing an ultrasound today to make sure things are ok. I am replacing this stupid thing, there is some weird echo and it’s not normal. I want to be sure and the sonogram will better tell us.”

He got up and left before I could reply to that!

“Does that mean..?”

“Calm down Emily, it’s possible but he didn’t say there was problems, it’s why he wants to do the sonogram.”

I just laid there, two successful pregnancies and one during a high stress time and no problems. The one time I get to have a completely normal pregnancy there is a problem? The nurse came and had me follow them, so after re-dressing we followed her to the room just down the hallway. Where I got comfortable again and she lubed up my abdomen. We were use to not seeing the screen at first, because the first couple of minutes was just checking the measurements and to us that would just look like little beans. But she looked concerned and after several minutes she got up and just walked out, without saying anything.

I looked at Zac who did not help because he looked as confused as I was, so I waited and she came back with Dr. O’Brian who took over, he did the same thing she did but at least by his facial expression it wasn’t a concern, but he seemed a bit perplexed. He finally turned the monitor around and I could see the little blur of grays but recognized the familiar pouch but there was something abnormal about it.

“Why does that look so weird? That’s not normal is there something wrong?” I asked.

He smiled. “I assure you this is normal. It appears that your having twins, I can’t totally tell if this is identical or fraternal, but it really looks like identical.”

Both of us heard the thud to my left and we both looked over, Zac was laying flat in the floor out cold. Never had he passed out on me at a doctor’s appointment. Dr. O’Brian quickly checked on him and I remained laying, I mean clearly I didn’t hear him right. It took him a few minutes to get Zac to at least sitting up, yet he looked a little bit green.

“Are you feeling ok?” Dr. O’Brian asked.

“Yeah..I..think.” he said.

He left him sitting there after a few more minutes and then he returned to the screen and he was moving it around and checking things and I just watched the screen and the different shapes and it looked so..foreign. It was not anything I was use to and then it seemed to come from nowhere, this sonogram looked like the one my mother had left for me.

“Dr. O’Brian…”

He looked up at me. “Yes?”

“I’m really hot.”

The words he had said several minutes ago finally sank in. Twins. Not one baby, but two. He was getting something and I thought I was fine but then Zac was fanning me and Dr. O’Brian was rubbing something cold on my face. Both of them looked concerned.

“Emily? Where are you?” Dr. O’Brian asked.

It took me a moment to remember. “Doctor’s office.”

He had me drink some of the sprint he had and he and Zac sat me up some, letting me cool off.

“You’re kidding me right, two?”

“I can’t positively confirm until next one but you are having twins. There are clearly two little bodies there and it could explain your weight gain so early on. Twins require double the amount of nutrients and your eating for two and not three.”

“Are you sure?” Zac asked.

“Yes. It appears that everything is fine though.”

Since the sonogram was done he moved us back to a room where we both sat still pretty much stunned.

“Did he say twins?” Zac asked.

I slowly nodded. “Yes, he said twins.”

“So…baby three and baby four at the same time?”

“Yes.”

Neither of us said anything else but Dr. O’Brian came in and sat down. I was sitting beside Zac so he was eye level.

“Still in shock?”

“Yes.” We said.

“Well, you seem to be doing really good. No excessive sickness?”

“No. I got a little warm once and got a little sick but nothing major.”

“Are you responding in a high emotional state like with Isabella?”

“Not really, I mean there was some times before we found out but we were doing major construction at the time and I think that was more related to that than being pregnant.”

“I have reviewed your file and I want to monitor you pretty closely. First because twin pregnancies can have complications and while you have had two already, we want to make sure that you are physically ok to carry two. Because you verged on preeclampsia last time we have to watch for that.”

“Could that be a problem?” Zac asked.

“Yes. I know this is the last thing you want to hear but Emily it may be a requirement that you be on bed rest for a while. Right now you’re ok and I’m not saying this is a requirement. But we’ll monitor and see.”

That wasn’t good news to me but I nodded, bed rest was like being sentenced to hell, it was so boring and just blah. I’d do anything to avoid that!

“Follow up in a month, if you keep gaining excessively then let me know but you should taper a bit now.”

He handed us the print outs and we thanked him, made the next appointment and left. We got to the truck and got in and neither of us moved, Zac made no effort to crank the truck up. I think we were both pretty much still in shock.

“He said twins right?” Zac asked for the second time.

“Afraid so.”

It was very clear that we were not ever expecting to hear that news. After some time we returned to the office, because Casey and Robert had jobs and needed to be busy and not simply babysitting. We both tried to act as normally as possible.

“You two were gone a long time.” Casey said.

He was eyeing us both very suspiciously.

“Doctor was running late.” Zac said.

“Everything ok?”

“I’ll know in a few days, they don’t run them right then!” I said.

He raised his eyebrow and clearly didn’t believe me but he didn’t push it. Instead they went and got busy so Casey and Robert could take tomorrow off. What did I do? The moment it was just me and them, I cried like I was three.

“Mama?” Alexander asked.

“Yes sweetie?”

“You ok?”

I picked him up and sat him in my lap. “Mama’s ok. Just needed a moment to cry. It happens sometimes and it’s ok.”
Isabella was quick to come over too and I got her up too. Four children, I had to be fucking insane. Since I was caught up and really didn’t have anything I could do, I let them down and moved to the playroom to spend some time with them until it was time to go home. Both of us were still stunned and neither of us commented on the big pink elephant in the room.

I was having doubts with a newborn and two toddlers. How could I possibly be able to handle two newborns and two toddlers?!
