Chapter 138 –  Double Trouble

POV:  Emily

Word count: 4402

January 2, 2017; 4 am

The twins were now a day old and having two newborns was a bit more challenging than a single baby. However, it was working well feeding them at the same time and I was so glad that I was producing enough for two.  I’d talked to everyone during the day and sent dozens of pictures to Maddi, Max, and our families. Unfortunately, Alexander and Isabella couldn’t come up because they were snowed in majorly and we had no car seats. We were also stuck at the hospital because no one could get out. Casey and Robert had been in during the day but we hadn’t seen either of them since 10pm the night before. I had just finished feeding them and Zac had gotten them changed and laid down when there was a knock.

“Come in.” Zac said.

The door opened and Casey and Robert walked in both carrying little bundles of joy wrapped in blankets.

“No way.” I said.

Casey smiled. “Meet James Louis Smith, who arrived at 2:03 am and Jennifer Hazel Smith who arrived at 2:10.”

They were both so freaking adorable, but while Gabriel and Nathaniel were mirror images of one another, they were different. Jennifer had light brown fuzz and James had dark brown and they were so cute, they had Casey’s little smiles.

“She has blue eyes and he has brown.”

“It happens with fraternal twins.”

“Yeah, we know. We can’t stay long because the nurses will flip out but we were allowed to bring them down because they haven’t cleared you to walk down there yet.”

We both got to hold them for a few minutes and visit our godchildren, as they had already asked us and we’d agreed.

“Um, guys if you’re ok with it my aunt Amy’s husband Billy has a four wheel drive. I talked to them earlier and they said if you wanted them too they would take you home. I know you don’t have their car seats but if you’re OK with Christopher or Aaron giving it to them they can drop by and get it.”

“That would be awesome but I don’t know when they’re going to release us. I think Dr. Hayward is keeping me a little longer because of the circumstances for the labor.”

“Not a problem, just saying it’s an option. I know when we are released he’ll be getting us.”

“Yeah, this snow storm is stupidly bad timing.”

“How are Alexander and Isabella?”

“Oh God, Alexander is driving them insane wanting to come see them.” Zac said.

“Is your Aunt coming up?”

“She will today, yes.” Robert said.

I looked at Zac and he smiled. “Can you see if they’ll stop by and get them? Let them visit for a little bit. Alexander’s wanting to see the babies and he wants to make sure she’s ok.”

“They’ll be glad too. Christopher has them right?”

“Yeah, uh..Craig may go back with them but we need clothes anyway. I don’t mind the gown look but I want some clothes and Zac needs a shower.”

“I’ll have them go to Christopher’s, he can get the other stuff ready.”

“Ok.”

They had to take them back to the other room but Zac laid his head down. “It does get easier right?”

“Yes.”

“How did Eliza take the news?”

“She is disappointed, she wanted to be there but she’s glad they’re ok.”

“Isaac said if he can get out of the driveway, he would come up. But, he wasn’t sure.”

“I’m glad it stopped snowing, but damn it’s going to be rough.”

“You nap a while, you need the rest. I’ll give Christopher a call and let him know the plan.”

“Ok.”

I settled back and did get to nap, they were more demanding but they also were about every two hours, so I knew I had at least some form of a nap. I was up and down most of the morning, feeding them mostly as the other two were doing pretty much all of the diaper’s. Even if a few times Craig faked fainted from the smell. About noon Casey and Robert brought them back for us to see and Zac had the bright idea of getting a photo of them all, which as it turns out was very easy to do. Gabriel and Nathaniel were comfortable placed together and he placed Jennifer and James on the right side. He got good ones and sent them to everyone before James melted down. It was their feeding time apparently.

“Jennifer is like every two hours, him like every hour. Reminds me of Zac, but I am certain he’s not Zac’s.”

“Reminds me of you also, you do recall whipping him and Max at the eating challenge right?”  I asked.

“I do..I recall the punishment for that too.” Zac said.

“I have heard of this stripper dance, I may have to see this at some point.” Robert said.

“Dude, when? You have newborns and we have newborns, four of them. Plus we have two older ones! Time dude, time.” Zac said.

“Grandparents!” I said.

Everyone giggled, his aunt called about 2 and said they were headed up, Aaron was with them but they had room for Craig to return to the house if he wanted and he was looking ragged. It did take them an hour, they were driving slow but Casey and Robert were back in their room and Aaron brought our big kids to us. Alexander was up on the bed quickly where I got hugs.

“I worried Mama.”

I kissed his forehead. “You did not have to worry. Mama is fine and so are the babies.”

Isabella wanted Daddy first, I couldn’t believe we had four children that were four and under. What the hell were we thinking?!

“Where babies?”

“Daddy has them right there, there sleeping. Why don’t you let Daddy show you?”

He hopped down and I took my only daughter and hugged her.

“Mama hav baby?”

“Yes, Mama had the babies. Daddy is showing Alexander and then you can see too. Have you been good for Uncle Christopher?”

“We play with Jasme and Treor.”

“Really? Were you nice?”

“Un Chris said we hav share.”

“Yes, you have to share toys.”

“Hav share with babies?”

“Yes, we always share.”

She pouted some but hugged me. “Luv you Mama.”

“I love you too Isabella.”

Alexander was nagging Zac to hold the babies and he looked at me.

“You can’t be serious.”

Aaron smiled. “You can each hold two. I’ll take the picture.”

I had to maneuver on the bed and I sat Isabella down in my lap, Zac sat down and got Alexander sat down in his. Craig laid Gabriel in Isabella’s lap and she seemed so happy, he then laid Nathaniel in Alexander’s lap, he was great at support. We leaned in, getting close and Aaron got several pictures. They actually admired there little brothers for some time before they got tired of holding them, a problem was Gabriel was getting fussy and Nathaniel needed a clean diaper. Alexander and Isabella got down for me to feed them and they stayed with Zac a while. Robert brought his Aunt and Uncle over after a while.

“Aunt Amy and Uncle Billy, I believe you met them at the wedding?”

“We did, but we didn’t really have a lot of time to chat or interact.”

The twins were covered up at the moment, almost done eating. But they gushed over how cute Isabella and Alexander were. Once the twins were done Zac helped and they got to see them while they were awake.

“So adorable. Identical too.”

“Yeah, they really don’t have many differences at all, although personality wise they seem to have some differences.”

“They usually do.”

They let us know they were going to leave around 5, which was good because the kids would want dinner. Having the four of them together was so awesome, the older two wanted to see and hold and be around them which was good. Zac took Alexander down to meet James and Jennifer and he returned with Alexander crying pretty heavily.

“What happen?”

“Major jealously with Casey..Oh that was bad.”

He came and sat with me, clearly upset and he cried for several additional minutes before calming some.

“Alexander, what is it?”

“Asey no lov me.”

“Why do you think that?”

“He has babies, I not his baby no more.”

I really didn’t know what would make this situation better but I considered it and kissed his forehead.

“We have Isabella and the new babies, but you are still our baby. Just because Uncle Casey had babies now, doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you.”

He didn’t reply and Zac looked helpless too. Casey finally came in, it had taken him long enough but Zac had said he was feeding Jennifer when they came out.

“Bad Asey.” I said.

I moved my foot and he sat down. “How bad?”

“He thinks you don’t love him, because he’s not your baby anymore.”

Casey leaned over and tried to get his attention but he just turned away. I hadn’t considered to prepare him for their babies, but really I’d been preoccupied with being on bed rest.

“Alexander.”

He barely looked at him but least he was acknowledging Casey was there.

“You are still my little man, you always will be Alexander.”

“You have new babies.” He mumbled.

Casey slid forward and I adjusted a little bit more and he finally got him to look at him some.

“You are my big boy, my little helper. Just like you are with Mommy and Daddy. Just because I have babies of my own, doesn’t mean I won’t love you. I know you wanted me to hold you but I couldn’t right then, just like Mommy has to feed the babies I have to feed them too.”

Alexander didn’t seem to be warming to that idea at all, but he was now at least looking at him.

“Still lov me?” he asked.

Jesus Christ I hope he never asked me that question with that little pout and sadness in his voice, made me want to bawl and it wasn’t me he asked, but clearly it effected Casey.

“Of course I still love you. Nothing will ever change that Alexander. I’ll always be your Asey.”

It almost felt like he wasn’t going to believe that but he finally moved and hugged him. Casey then explained that Jennifer and James were his babies but that Alexander would always be the first, which he would be because I wasn’t sure Casey would have agreed to children so quickly if it wasn’t for having Alexander around. He had to smooth things over with him before they had to go. He even walked down with them when they left but he came back to the room.

“I never want to hear those words again.”

“Don’t blame you, made me want to bawl and it wasn’t even me he asked.”

“I really didn’t think he’d react that way.” Zac said.

“Neither did I, he’s seen me with babies before, including feeding them. I guess my daughter was different to him.”

“Your daughter, that sounds so weird.”

“It does sound weird. So does my son. But, I really didn’t mean for Alexander to be hurt and I will make a concentrated effort to make sure I don’t push him aside. By all means if you see me doing that, slap me.”

“Deal.” Zac said.

“So, are you taking her offer to go home?”

“Probably, I mean they’re not going to keep us forever and even with a few suits we can’t stay forever. If they can get us home safely I think that would be the best.”

“I agree.” Zac said.

“I’ll let them know. Doctor giving you clean bills?”

“Yeah, they think with Gabriel the excessive force made him swallow some mucus, Jacey got his airways cleared and cleaned out. She just didn’t want me to see that while Nathaniel was still cozy. Doctor’s here are shocked there so big.”

“Yeah, Jennifer and James aren’t that big. They were five pounds 1 ounce and five four respectively.”

“I’m just glad they weren’t eight or nine pounds. I don’t think I could handle that.”

“I know one thing, next time you’re so damn close no sex.”

“How in the hell did you two manage that?’

“Oral sex, just as good as intercourse sometimes. It does seem like sex puts me into labor, but um, who the hell says there will be another one?”

Casey laughed. “She has a point Zac.”

“I know, just saying we didn’t expect numbers three and four.”

“Ok, well I’m going to let you two rest and spend some alone time with your new additions.”

“Ok, enjoy the time with yours.”

“Oh I am.”

He gave us hugs and pecks on the cheek and then headed out. We settled in and got comfortable it was pleasant to have this alone time with them for Zac too. I would get it over the next few weeks all to myself. I cat napped mostly there but about 9 I sent Aaron a message that said my bedroom better be cleaned up when I got home. He assured me it would be.

January 25, 2017; Wednesday

We had to stay until the fourth because they thought I had an infection, but after two subsequent tests that were negative they sent me home with instructions to come back if anything abnormal occurred. Nothing had occurred in the last three and a half weeks. I was adjusting very well to double babies feeding and while Maddi hadn’t continued her breastfeeding when she returned to work, I was most likely not returning in a full time capacity.

We’d been shocked last week when George said Christina dropped a bomb, they were pregnant and she was due in May with a little girl, none of us had a single clue they were expecting again. But, apparently there were problems with the ultrasounds and there was a very high risk that she’d lost her, but the last appointment showed a strong heartbeat and good fetal development. So, they went ahead and told everyone but also cautioned us on the prospect that something might be wrong or she may not make it.
It was still white in Tulsa, but the snow wasn’t near as deep as it was then and we could get out and visit people or they could come to us. Sleeping in my actual bed, in my bedroom was so nice. Being able to stand, move, go up and down the steps, shower alone, and shave my own legs was also just as nice. Despite coming home the fourth, it was several days before anyone could get out. So, the boys were over a week old before most of the family saw them in anything beyond pictures. We still hadn’t made it to see Maddi or anyone there, because the roads were just unsafe for them to come here or for us to go down. But, I compensated by sending pictures and lots of them.

They were doing Fool’s Banquet this week here in Tulsa, using the studio as the recording base. The Fairfield Inn hotel was the sleeping quarters. A lot of the individuals present were nagging Zac to see the new arrivals because we had posted they were born, but had not given out a lot of details. Since I felt fine and I felt like getting out of the house for a while, I’d been cooped up there for months already, I opted to go in today. I wouldn’t be in management mode but I would be here.

We both got up earlier than normal and got all four children dressed warmly and got Gabriel and Nathaniel in their car seats and bundled well. Diaper bags were packed and we actually made it to the studio by the time he was suppose to be there, which was 8. We had the twins in the center now and the older two in the back. Getting them out was a bit frantic because Isabella wanted to run but a call of her name from Zac turned her around quickly. Alexander held the side of Gabriel’s car seat as we walked inside and Zac ended up carrying Isabella and the other car seat.

Taylor and Isaac had seen them twice but the moment we came into the door the car seats were stolen from us each one taking one.

“Were you guys stalking the door?” I asked.

Isaac and Taylor both smiled. “Maybe.”

“You’d think they don’t have kids of their own.”

“You shouldn’t be here.” Isaac said.

“Hey, we’re popular. Everyone wants a piece of them and me and us.” I giggled.

“We adjusted the heat for the office, it’s nice and warm for you and them.”

Alexander and Isabella actually laid back down and went back to sleep. The twins were laid in the baby bed once their uncles decided to put them down, they were due up for food soon though.

“Who all is here?”

“Not Gabby but Julie is here and you’ll be happy to know she’s had everything covered, every day.” Taylor said.

“Oh I know she was here, she called to make sure it was ok.”

“She did?” Zac asked.

“Yep. Kent here?”

“He is and he knows about you and them.”

“Who else?”

“Well, not many know you’ll be here but Carrick knows and Alexander. In addition there is Jeremy, Nickolas, Liam, and aside from Julie a new and upcoming artist Leslie, who also keeps covered and is married so not interested in anyone here.”

“Ok, I’m keeping the door closed up here because I know you guys can get loud. Will Nikki or Natalie be coming by?”

“Natalie said she was coming to get twin love.” Taylor said.

“Nikki is too.”

“Is Casey not coming down?”

“Nope. He called in 6 weeks leave. There…adjusting. But, if you want we can walk up and visit after we’re done if there up to it.”

“I’ll call him and see, you guys get busy. I have my shawl but let them know if the door is locked and the blinds closed not to knock but to have you text me.”

“How about I not send anyone up without letting you know first, that way if there asleep or your feeding them I’ll know to have them wait.”

“Deal. Can you make them breakfast?”

“Yep.”

They headed down, Zac went to fix the breakfast for us all basically and he came back up right after they woke up, perfect timing for breakfast. I had found that while sometimes they both wanted to be fed at the same time, they were generally 30-40 minutes off, they were really steady unlike the other two and I loved that. By the time anyone was told I was here they were done with the 9 and 9:40 feedings. Unlike Isabella they did not really eat slowly. My first visitor was Carrick who after giving me hugs had to visit.

“I can’t tell who they look more like, you or Zac.”

“Ironically, they seem to be some perfect combination of the two of us. My eyes but his ears, nose and forehead and I mean they are
boys so they took that after him too.”

He smiled and visited and throughout the day a few came up and visited, not all of them did though because some just didn’t know us that well. Carrick and Alexander came up and about 3 I saw Kent approach the door but he couldn’t get in because I was feeding Gabriel so when I was done with them both I let Zac know and he and Kent came back up.

“You seriously had twins three weeks ago?!”

“I did, yes. I am not the size I was before dude, don’t even go there.”

“You look great Emily, especially for someone who just had twins.”

Zac got Nathaniel from me and let him see him, Gabriel was asleep beside me on the sofa.

“They are so cute, not that these two adorable ones aren’t. You two make very pretty babies.”

“Thank you.” Zac said.

Like the others he didn’t hang around long but Zac sat down on the other side.

“I called Casey, he said they’ll do dinner if we’ll come down about 6. Are you going to feel up to that?”

“Yeah, but we need to take the van down.”

“I’m going too actually, I think I’ll put these four in the car and ride them down because it’s quite windy and I really don’t want you or the kids to be sick when we go to the island.”

“Ditto, I know Aaron is staying with me but I don’t think the two of us can handle four sick kids.”

“He’s got a space in the garage too, so that will help when we leave.”

“Yep. Ok, I’ll have them ready about 5:45.”

He kissed me. “Did the visits go well?”

“Yeah. Carrick swears Gabriel smiled at him, I think it was just gas. Nathaniel decided that he didn’t like Alexander and cried. The other’s didn’t stay too long, basically to pop in and some didn’t even show up. Nikki and Natalie both came early this morning and visited a while.”

He smiled. “I love you.”

“I love you too. Go finish working.”

He scooped Alexander up and took him with him, but Isabella didn’t like that one bit and cried until he came back for her.

“You should have known better.”

“I did..I was just hoping..”

He took them downstairs for a while, since I was free from the wild ones I logged in and went over some paper work, replied to e-mails and kind of caught up. Inventory would be soon and I didn’t want to be very far behind, I guess when I logged in Sean knew I was here because he came in.

“I didn’t know you were here!”

“I’ve been here all day, how is little Destiny?”

“Keeping us up all night, she’s had some colic the last few weeks so she’s been really fussy.”

“I’m sorry, I know that sucks.”

“Definitely. How are you? I heard you got to deliver at home this time.”

“Oh god, that was…I don’t know which of us was more afraid. Me for being there and not having that security of a doctor or Zac for not knowing what to do. But, I think had Doctor Hayward not been close by and able to get there it would have been worse.”

“I’m shocked your even moving around.”

“Dude, I spent two fucking months in a bed! I want movement!”

He and I laughed and he made it over to the baby bed to see the newest arrivals again, they had come over too once it was safe to do so.

“Any problems?”

“None, they seem to think your absent is permanent.”

“It’s not permanent, but until they are a bit older it won’t be often. I can’t handle four of them plus working full time. It was ok with just two, but until there older I can’t.”

“Understandable, I was shocked you were able to handle two and work.”

“Is Amanda going back to work soon?”

“She is. We’ve been going to day cares and finding the best one in town. We have two so far that are at the top but we’re contacting the references and really taking our time.”

“That is a good thing and if you need help let me know.”

“Sure thing. Ok, I just came to make sure it was you since I didn’t know you were here.”

“It’s ok. I was just checking really to make sure things were up to date but you’re doing a great job. Likewise, I checked my e-mail.”

“How bad was that?”

“I was checking it from home too, so not that bad. Although, it’s about feeding time so, going to sign out.”

“Ok, see you later.”

He went back downstairs and I got them ready, even if they didn’t eat at the same time I liked having them close by and it turns out they wanted to be fed together anyway. Zac had a few pictures of them eating for just us to have so it was nice. By the time he came back up they had been fed, changed, and were tucked in their car seats warm and snug.

We did take the van up to Casey’s and it was better for getting them in and out, Robert had fixed some kind of stew and the whole house smelled delicious. Jennifer and James were in the separate basinets, sound asleep.

“They just ate.” Robert said.

Casey made sure to get Alexander first before he got Nathaniel out of the car seat.

“So, how is it being a dad?” Zac asked.

“Tiring, how the hell do you do it?” Robert asked.

I snorted. “I get up every two hours, not him.”

“Lucky bastard!” Robert said.

“She leaves out that I get all the smelly, nasty diapers.”

“Ahh, he does have a point and Dr. O’Brian said I can start pumping Friday, so that will be a great thing.”

“Yep. You look rested though.”

“I finally figured it out, you sleep when they do. I am tired but they aren’t as picky as those two with every hour to hour and a half, Gabriel likes about 2.5 hours and Nathaniel is more 2.”

“Have Papa’s seen them?”

“Yes, they came up last week and Nathaniel was more than honored to have a grandson with his name.”

“Good. So, dinner’s almost done, just waiting on the bread.”

“Perfect, I’m starving.”  Zac said.

We giggled and about fifteen minutes we were sitting down to eat, Alexander and Isabella had high chairs here so they sat and ate very well too. Appears they liked Uncle Robert’s stew. We stayed there until about 10 before we headed home and got the kids in bed and us. He was going to the island alone, it was too risky to take the twins with them being this young so Aaron was coming to chill with me as extra help, but Amanda also said she would along with Natalie and Nikki. Added, by then Maddi could come visit too.
