Chapter 141 –   Picking a Sitter

POV:  Zac

Word count: 2822

June 21, 2017

We should be preparing to leave soon for the tour but instead we needed to select a nanny or bodyguard to help Emily with the children when I wasn’t available to help, which when we were touring was quite often. Eliza had went through some agency and found a few candidates which she then had full backgrounds done to ensure they were legitimate, her original plan was to hire a guy but Emily told her she wanted a female, because she’d be alone with the person and she didn’t want this individual to be stronger than she is. So, Eliza found a few women who were coming in today to meet us and meet the children.

“How long will we lose you?” Isaac asked.

“No idea, just depends on how she feels with them and how they do.”

“Well, how about we call it a day for practice and we can focus on cleaning up our offices, catching up e-mails, and even packing what we’ll need from here.”

“Ok. She’s been cleaning our office as well and doing whatever she can for the tour, it’s just taking longer with all of them here.”

“Understandable. We also need to clean the bus good, but I think Natalie and Nikki said they’d do that if we needed.”

“We may, but I’ll see.”

We discussed some changes before Emily sent me a text saying Eliza was almost here and that the first person was also. I excused myself and went up-stairs to Isaac’s office, we were going to use his for the initial interview. Aaron was sitting with the four children in the playroom, that way they weren’t bored. This also allowed us to talk with them first, before they seen the children. Eliza was let in and she hugged us.

“I hope one of these are good, I tried to pick people with experience and that like to travel.”

“I hope so, they’ll be traveling the rest of the year pretty much.”

“I know and I made sure these people were available also.”

Eliza let the first woman inside at 10, she was in her 40’s, long brown hair and pretty green eyes. Her name was Sandra Blacksmith.

“Good morning.” Emily said.

“Morning.”

I greeted her and she didn’t seem shell shocked, so that was a plus for me. Emily started the interview with some pretty basic questions wanting to know how she felt about the traveling, sleeping on a bus, what her expectations were. Some of her answer’s were a little off, because she liked to travel but asked if there were multiple hotel stays and she was mildly worried that most of our crew was male. Emily asked about her discipline methods, her views on cartoons and toys and those were good answers! About 11, Emily went and got Alexander and Isabella.

“This is our son, Alexander and daughter Isabella, they are 4 and almost three. Her birthday is next month and his in October.”

“They are so cute! Such pretty eyes.”

The lady looked confused when Emily left the room, as if she didn’t know we had more than two. Emily came back carrying the twins.

“This is Gabriel and Nathaniel, there seven months.”

“Oh..I thought you had just the two.”

“So, sometimes we wish it was just the two. The twins were born the first of January, so there still rather young.”

She sat them down and I knew then what she was doing, she was judging weather this lady would get along with them. She seemed shell shocked and very concerned, she didn’t seem to know what to do with four of them.

“Why would you choose to have so many so quickly?”

“Well, we didn’t choose to have them, we didn’t plan any of their pregnancies.” I said.

“Pardon me but twins are almost exclusively from fertility treatments, that indicates planned.”

I knew Emily was slapping a no on her by the look on her face, but yet she still couldn’t resist talking, I kept quiet.

“Actually Mrs. Green, I have twin brothers and I have a twin sister obviously. Neither of us were via fertility treatments. Added, my three older brothers have twins and none of them were via fertility treatments. In any event, it really isn’t any of your business how or when we have children. I think we’re done here.”

I said nothing but Mrs. Green nodded and left the room.

“I don’t like her.” Alexander said.

“Neither does Mommy honey.”

She took them back to the playroom, but since it was close to lunch we went ahead and went down and fixed lunch.

“You want to feed Gabriel? Nathaniel’s had a bottle the last two times.”

“Sure.”

Aaron got them all down here without problems and got them sat down at the table. I took Gabriel and he seemed very content.

“Daddy’s big boy.”

He smiled and cooed but he still would not take a bottle from anyone else. Yet, he took them fine from me. She sat down with Nathaniel and got him comfortable and I sat down with Gabriel.

“Will he still not take a bottle for anyone else?” Aaron asked.

“Nope. I think it’s got something to do with the way he holds him.” Emily said.

It was possible but I was going with the idea that he just preferred his Daddy if it wasn’t Mommy feeding him. I could be biased though.

“How did the first one go?” he asked.

“She’s a no, questioning why we have four children like it’s some sin to have more than two. I don’t need anyone judging me because I have four children.”

“No you don’t, besides none of us would trade these four for anything.”

She smiled and when the four of them were done we headed back up-stairs, she and I changed the boys diapers before the next person arrived. She was blonde, blue eyes and probably in her late 20’s, that poor girl though never got to meet them. She spent the whole 45 minutes staring at me, well more specifically staring at my lap, making me uncomfortable and surely that didn’t go over well with Emily.  She had done good but when she asked whether the band wore underwear on the bus, Emily thanked her and sent her on her way.

“She’s a no.” I said.

“Yeah, totally. Did she even look at your face? I don’t think she did and I don’t need to go to jail for stomping her ass.”

“I don’t think so and exactly, no jail time for you.”

Number three did well for the entire interview but once we took her to the playroom to meet the children, she simply sat and watched. She didn’t talk to them, interact with them, or even acknowledge them. The boys tried to get her attention and the one time Alexander bragged about getting all the blocks into the right places she simply nodded. Never said a word and he looked so disappointed that I wanted to hug Aaron for scoping him up and telling him what a smart boy he was. Once she left we both kind of shook our heads, but if it came down to just having another body there she’d be okay.

“Eliza, please tell me you found someone not so…I don’t know not the last three? A prude, a fan, and a woman who doesn’t believe in words.”

“Well, I have one more but she’s younger than Zac and the fan girl. I’m not sure you’d approve.”

“Did she pass a background?” I asked.

“Yes. Nothing on her background at all, not even a traffic ticket.”

“Does she have experience with children?” Emily asked.

“Yes. She has worked for some of the top names in Tulsa. The references all came back okay, everyone seemed to love her.”

“Does she have a full time job?” I asked.

“Graphics, when I asked her about that she said her job is a laptop and as long as she can sometimes access her e-mail and contact clients she’d be good. The job allows her to baby sit and all without it affecting anything else.”

“Where is she?” I asked.

She made the call and was letting someone in our studio door 20 minutes later. The girl that walked into Isaac’s room made us both do a double take! She was wearing black pants with boots, they had some heels but she was about 5 foot 5, maybe less. The shirt she had worn had neon colors in random geometric shapes, it was bright and loud for sure. She had dark brown eyes and her hair was jet black except for the blue coloring on the ends, which faded so seamlessly it seemed like that was natural! She really didn’t strike me as anyone who would want to be around children.

“Hi, my name is Savannah Paige O’Hara. I was called for an interview about a possible Nanny bodyguard type job.”

The way she smiled at Emily seemed way to friendly and I saw the slight memorized look my wife had but she smiled at her and
shook her hand when it was extended.

“Emily Hanson, yes we’re looking for someone to tour with us. The primary job description is to help me watch our children, it was hard the last tour but this tour it’ll be a bit more since we now have four instead of two.”

“Not a problem, I love traveling and seeing new places. I assume then your referring to touring in a bus?”

“Yes, customized bus actually.”

She shook my hand. “Zachary Hanson right?”

“Yes, are you familiar with Hanson?”

She sighed. “I am, anyone living in Tulsa should be really. I’m familiar with the band, your charitable acts. I did not know you had four children, I only recall the first two, a boy and a girl right?”

“Yes, Alexander and Isabella. We welcomed twins January 1st.” Emily said.

“Sweet! Boys? Girls? Both?”

“Twin boys.”

She smiled. “I love twins.”

“Are you a twin or have any on your family?”

“Unfortunately no. I just love them. Aren’t you a twin too Mrs. Hanson? The girl that let me in looked like you.”

“Yes, Eliza the one who contacted you. She’s my sister.”

“FBI agent, I’m impressed. I didn’t really see her until she let me inside, our conversations were over the phone mostly.”

I glanced at Emily who was smiling at her! Then again, she had this upbeat personality and she seemed very positive, she reminded me of Velma actually.

“So you don’t have a problem traveling? Not even overseas?” I asked.

“No. I’ve been to most states already, just a few I haven’t been too like Alaska and Hawaii. Um, overseas I haven’t been to those places but I’d love to go.”

“No boyfriends to contend with?” Emily asked.

“No.”

“Well, in that case would you like to meet the four children?”

“There here?” She asked.

“Oh yes, they stay with us all the time. Emily works here as well so we modified our office and included a play room for our children and my brothers.”

“Nice. I would love to meet them. Is there anything there afraid of? Noises? Sounds?”

I swear to god Emily melted when she asked because she didn’t make any effort to say anything, added she was the only one that had bothered to ask.

“Um, nothing really but Isabella is a little bit wary of new people, she doesn’t much like crowds. So, it’s best if she comes to you. Alexander is easy going, wild as hell still. Um, the twins are iffy at times. There just learning how to crawl.”

“Nice. I’ll keep that in mind.”

We got up and lead her to the office, where they were playing. Isabella immediately went to Uncle Aaron because she was between us and her, but I moved to the side and she came right to me, Savannah just smiled at her and waved, but didn’t come near her.
Alexander and the twins appraised her but then she just sat down in the floor and started playing with the blocks. Aaron gave us a very confused look as he looked at her but it really was a good idea, because Isabella moved away from my leg.

“Blocks.” She said.

Savannah looked at her. “Do you like the colorful blocks?”

Isabella nodded. “Blocks.”

Savannah held one out and slowly Isabella moved toward her and then sat down to play with the blocks, stacking them and dropping. Even I noticed that as she was talking to Isabella, it was clear language and she was naming colors, shapes, even the letters on them. I really didn’t need to ask, I was certain that she would be joining us. Yet, before long Alexander was beside her talking away and Gabriel was the last one to mosey over to the new lady.

“Well, I think you won them over.” Emily said.

“It’s not always hard, most new nannies or sitters assume that children will just take to them, they don’t. Some don’t bother to ask what scares them or what bothers them, it’s important because I don’t want to make a barking sound and them be terrified of dogs.”

“Our children are not animal scared. Although, Isabella is our iffy child. She didn’t go to Disney last year but the first time she went she was terrified of Minnie mouse and just hated it. She ended up staying most of the time at the hotel with family.”

“I see. Is there anything else that I need to avoid or allergies?”

Emily sat down in the floor and I chose the floor as well.

“Not that we’re aware of. The twins really haven’t gone outside the studio and home, so we may find allergies once they are out and about. Alexander loves animals even the creepy ones, Isabella likes animals but she’s not wild about reptiles.”

“Most girls aren’t.”

Emily recognized the hungry cried from the boys, it was past their normal feeding time. Aaron ran down and got a bottle for Gabriel, since Nathaniel had gone twice with one. I expected Emily to leave the room, but she just covered up, then again if she was with us on the bus then she’d surely see her feeding them more than once.

“You breastfeed one and bottle feed the other one?”

She seemed very confused on that.

Emily giggled. “No, there both breastfed, all four of them have been. I can do both at once it’s just usually not comfortable now that they’re bigger. Gabriel, however, will only take a bottle from his dad. He will cry and eventually scream if anyone else tries, everyone has tried.”

She smiled. “He just loves Daddy.”

“Not that daddy complains.” I said.

He was curled up taking the bottle like nothing else, they got diaper changes after and we just sat here and chatted. Before Savannah left Emily had her fill out the paper work and added her to payroll, she was being paid by us though and not anyone else. We got home later and got dinner fixed and the four of them fed, the twins were loving their solids, Bananas and peaches currently but we were adding them every few days.

“So, you like Savannah?” I asked.

“I think she’s the best candidate and really, did you see how Isabella took to her?”

“I didn’t ask how you thought she’d be. I asked if you liked her.”

“I don’t know Zac, I don’t know her that well.”

“Okay, I’m sure she’ll be fine with the kids.”

“Yeah, she said she’d come in the next few days for a few hours to kind of learn their schedules and get better acquainted with not just them but us too. She needs to meet Taylor, Isaac, and the crew.”

“It’s going to be so weird without Casey.”

“I thought he was coming with us for the U.S. part?”

“He is, but it’s going to be weird once we leave the states.”

“Yeah, but he doesn’t want to be that far away from the kids. James has been sick quite a bit.”

“Yeah, he’s got another ear infection now, there not sure what’s going on.”

“Poor baby, is Robert going to be okay with them both?”

“Oh yeah, he’s going to spend some time with his nieces and nephew too, they’re going to come over.”

“Well, I guess we should crash for the night, lot to do this week but if the kids settle with Savannah I may get to help some. I kind of want to know how she’d be alone with them too.”

“The fact that the playroom has cameras has nothing to do with that?”

She smiled. “Never said what I’d be doing, but really there are times she’d be alone.”

“True.”

We got the kids ready for bed and then went to bed ourselves. I hoped Savannah was going to be a good fit with us.
