January 13, 2019; Saturday
Thanksgiving and Christmas had gone very well, despite being pregnant with twins again she was happy and her blood pressure was fine. This was like the easiest pregnancy ever for her. Granted she was tired but that was expected because she was pregnant and like the boys, these girls were larger than normal.
For this year’s Back to the Island Emily did come with me. Savannah did as well to help her with the children, which worked out fine. We’d gotten back today and had barely gotten unpacked before Sean was calling us, he was freaked out and Savannah agreed to stay here while Emily and I went over. Amanda was not doing good at all, she was a little over 36 weeks, not far off from Emily who insisted on being there. Amanda had not had a smooth pregnancy this round. She’d been sick, her blood pressure was high, and when Sean called us an hour ago he was panicked and wanted help. We arrived at 2 and Sean let us inside.
Amanda was laying on the couch and she looked as if she’d passed out.
“Did she pass out?” I asked.
“Yeah, Destiny was screaming about her cartoon not being on and she was trying to calm her down. Destiny stopped but then she started calling Mommy, I came in and she was laying out on the floor.”
Emily went to Amanda, who was freaking out and I could hear her talking quietly. I got Sean and pulled him aside.
“Are your bags packed?”
“Yes.”
“Do you have someone that’s watching Destiny?”
“My sister is, she said to bring her whenever.”
“Ok, I want you to call your sister and see if she can come get her right now.”
“Ok.” He said.
He called her and I stepped to Amanda.
“How you doing?”
“I just feel bad.” She said.
“I called Dr. O’Brian, he said for her to come to the hospital.” Emily said.
“Yeah, Sean is calling his sister to come get Destiny and then we’ll take you up there to be checked out at least.”
Once Destiny was picked up Sean and I helped her to the car and followed them, we had to wait in the waiting room because of how she was doing, they didn’t want extra people in the event they needed to do anything qualified as an emergency.
“Reminds me of the boys, how scared I was.” Emily said.
“I know Sean is terrified too.”
It was about six before Sean came out and he looked scared.
“They’re keeping her for observation at least, her blood pressure is high and it’s not coming down like they want. If it doesn’t come
down they will induce her. She would like to have Emily come back for a bit. She’s terrified.”
Emily got up and walked back and he sat down where she had been.
“How did you do it?”
“Do what?” I asked.
“I saw the pictures Zac, Aaron took a lot more than he said and we both know that. You didn’t look terrified or upset. How did you do it?”
I sat there a moment. “Honestly, I was so scared that something would happen. She was in a lot more pain, screaming even, we had no way to do anything if there was an emergency. I’m just glad that Dr. Hayward and Jacey were there. I was terrified Sean. I was afraid that one of the babies would have a problem, afraid that Emily would pass out or have problems. After Gabriel was born he didn’t cry, or scream, or anything and after Nathaniel it was so quiet in the house. I just knew something was wrong.”
“But they were fine, you just didn’t look scared at all in any of the pictures.”
I looked at him and smiled. “As men our entire job for creating life is the sex act, that’s it. At least, that’s what most men assume. They just assume that once she’s knocked up that’s it, but it’s far from the truth. The ones that stay know that while she’s cranky, pissy, acting like a bitch, or just being a pain in the ass that it’s our job to make it easier for her. Flowers, candy, random trips to get taco’s, random trips to get ice cream or whatever she may want at three am, the foot rubs and back rubs, drawings baths it’s all our way of contributing to the pregnancy. We can’t carry them, we can’t provide nutrients or even deliver them but we can make their experience better. I don’t look scared or terrified because I know that Emily was feeling that too. She was afraid, she didn’t want to have them at home with no help or no medical personnel. I put on the brave look to keep her as calm as I could.”
“So, while all those pictures show you being this calm, collected and cool person…reality was you were just as terrified as she was?”
“Yep, maybe even more because Emily was worried about losing one of them. I was worried about losing all three of them. She was worried about complications that could occur solely to Gabriel and Nathaniel, but I was also concerned she may hemorrhage and bleed out, that she may put too much stress and actually have a heart attack. I was worried that she would die on me.”
He looked at me. “Amanda’s going to be okay right?”
“She has some of the best nurses and doctor’s there is. I am sure she’ll be okay.”
We waited for over an hour before Emily came back to the front, clearly Amanda did need her to get her calmed a bit.
“They got her calmed down, she just needed to complain to me for a bit. They’re still talking tomorrow but she said for us to go home and come back in the morning, they’re going to see if she will sleep tonight and maybe if things are fine they’ll let her wait but Dr. O’Brian is concerned and feels induction is better. With the sudden passing out I am inclined to believe him.”
“Ok.” Sean said.
We gave him hugs and headed out, she was starving so we got pizza on the way home. The kids were happy to be home and in their beds. She however stopped at the new nursery.
“I can’t believe in a few weeks they’ll be here.”
I kissed her neck. “She’ll be fine Ems, we should however get some sleep. It could be a long day.”
She smiled and leaned against me a moment before we headed to bed.
January 14, 2019
We’d gotten up early, because Gabriel came in actually. Emily called Sean and Amanda was resting so we went ahead and cooked breakfast and fixed ourselves something to take with us. Savannah slept late but that was fine with us. We left about ten and once there we were allowed back. Sean stepped out to eat while we monitored.
“How are you feeling?” I asked.
“I’m okay right now. They started the medication at 9:45, I’m not feeling anything right now but I know I will soon.”
I smiled. “I’m sure everything will be fine. Savannah says hello and that she would be here but she’s kind of preoccupied with our children.”
“That’s fine, I like having super Mom Emily here.”
“I’m no super mom.”
“Yes you are. Speaking of, how are the angels?”
“They are doing fine. Can’t you tell by my balloon self?”
“Are you doing maternity pictures? We did then last week, thankfully.”
“Yeah, we’re driving down to Maddi’s this weekend. We have some things for her from Jamaica.”
“What did she want from there?”
“Well, they have Batik Fabrics, very pretty designs and they use like butterflies and geometric stuff, there absolutely divine. I got her a
bunch of different ones for the studio to use for backgrounds and then we had Riley and Dakota a quilt made with butterflies and one for Declan that’s blue and has geometric stuff on it. We got them one too with bright colorful flowers. I just know once these two arrive we won’t have time.”
“Makes sense.”
We settled in for a long day of waiting but by two she was moving along well. We took a quick break about 4 to get dinner and take a break, then returned. Emily also called to check on ours, they were fine. Alexander had his lessons already and they were just playing. By 8 she was in active labor and she was at 9, I politely excused myself to the waiting room, I had no problem watching my own children enter the world, but I drew the line with others. I called Savannah and checked in, she was getting them ready for bed, but I did talk to Alexander for a while as she bathed the twins.
I hung-up when she was done and waited on Emily, who came out at 9:30 smiling and she came and sat down beside me.
“Tired?”
“A little bit, but he’s here. 9:15 pm, you escaped just in time. Eight pounds even, they are naming him Corbin Rane. Nurse said she’d come out and get us both when she can. Sean’s sister is going to bring Destiny up in the morning and the rest of her family and his are coming then as well. They requested it, wanted tonight to bond.”
“Understandable, everything go okay?”
“Yes. No problems or complications. As far as I can tell he’s healthy and perfectly fine.”
“Our brood is all in bed, Alexander filled me in the day’s activities.”
“Did he have fun?”
“Always, Savannah is there.”
She laid her head down on my shoulder and I put my arm around her, held her there for a little while until we got to go back. Corbin was adorable and reminded me of Sean so much. Amanda was pretty much asleep.
“She was hurting pretty bad still, they gave her another dose of pain medication.” Sean said.
“I’m still awake.” She said.
Emily smiled. “Not entirely awake, but it’s cool.”
I had Corbin and he was sleeping soundly. We spent an hour back there with them all before we headed home, we would see her again at home when we brought ours over to meet him. Alexander was always happy with new babies unless it was Casey, thankfully he was over it by now, hopefully anyway.
Emily and I both were tired so we said goodnight to Savannah and crashed.
*time skip* February 12, 2019: Tuesday
Emily and I were at the hospital this time, her labor had started the 10th but she’d waited until late last night to come to the hospital. Savannah wanted to be there and Emily agreed so she was here and we had Avery with our children. She was bringing them up in an hour because there were lots of people here to help, at this rate they’d be here pretty soon.
“Just relax Bells.” Savannah said.
“Why do you call her Bells?”
“Because, everyone has their own little nickname for her. You call her Ems along with your brothers, her brothers call her Emmy, I just wanted something different. I know sometimes you call Isabella bells, but not often.”
“Well, it’s not her name.” I said.
“Guys? Really? I’m having babies here and your bothering to discuss what you call me?”
“Aww, come on it’s not like we’re discussing sex positions Bells.”
She rolled her eyes but grimaced and the machine said it was a contraction. Savannah did really good though considering. Emily had asked her months ago why she didn’t have children of her own or why she didn’t want any. Savannah couldn’t have children, I didn’t get all the details but I got enough to know it was a problem that was centered on the reproductive organs. I didn’t want more information than that.
Casey came in at 3, happy and with a camera in hand and Emily just shook her head.
“Hell no Casey, I don’t want birth pictures, I didn’t want them with the first three and not this one either!”
“Hey, I’m not doing that. I’m here for when they arrive and I can get pictures.”
She gave him a critical eye but I was glad he didn’t go that route, instead he was literally there as support. He’d missed the boys, he swore he wasn’t missing these two.
The first of two came at 5:05 pm with the second one coming at 5:15. Unlike the boys both were screaming just moments after being born and the cords cut. Savannah and Casey were going picture happy as the nurses weighted, cleaned, and got them wrapped up. I got to hold the older of the two for just a moment before handing her to Emily so she can nurse, because she was opting for breastfed again. The same occurred with the younger one, but I remained beside her to assist in latching and situation of them.
“So, everyone has asked many times and neither of you have said a damn thing. Do you have names or are they just Baby A and B for now?” Casey asked.
Emily smiled and looked down at them. “They’ve had names since we found out we were having twins.”
“What?! You’ve known what their names were the whole time and you didn’t bother to share with anyone?”
“Nope.”
Both of them just stared at us and I smiled, she was doing this on purpose, making them wait.
“Come on Ems! Zac? One of you!” He nagged.
I leaned down and kissed their foreheads. “Meet Brooklyn Elizabeth Rose and Juliet Elizabeth Rose.”
For several moments neither of them said anything.
“Juliet? As in the song Juliet?” Casey asked.
“No, it’s not from the song. It’s actually a name she liked long ago.” I said.
“I love their names.” Savannah said.
“Well, I’m going to step out and introduce them to the rest of the family, whom I am sure will want to come back too.”
“You know who to bring back first.” Emily said.
“I know which four to bring back first.”
I did wait until they had finished eating and then went and got our four with Savannah’s help and let everyone know they were here and they were doing well. Taylor had asked about names and Craig has asked about their weight, which was 7 lbs three each.
“Mama!” Alexander and Isabella yelled and ran to her. I was amazed they both of them could get on the bed with her by themselves now, they even avoided the blanket wrapped babies at the foot.
She hugged them both and they got to meet the new siblings. Gabriel and Nathaniel were not that thrilled with the new arrivals but they did okay with seeing them for the first time. Casey got the first picture of us together with them all. That was a fun chore. By 8 that night it was just us six again, Casey was holding Brooklyn and Savannah had Juliet, Emily was somewhere between awake and dead to the world asleep.
“Now that you have outnumbered Taylor by 1, any plans for more?” Casey asked.
“No.” We said.
“You realize that you must do something to prevent pregnancy right?” Casey asked.
Savannah kept quiet but she smiled slightly as Juliet kind of grinned.
“It’s been taken care of.” I said.
“Birth control for her? Is that safe to take while breastfeeding?”
I looked at him. “I got fixed Casey, back in October. We talked about it for a few months, made sure that we really didn’t or wouldn’t want more. We concluded that six was enough for us. I chose to be fixed.”
He blinked at me. “You got snipped?”
“I did. But, you can’t tell anyone else.”
He looked at Savannah and then us, confused. “She didn’t seem shocked about that news.”
“She came over after it was done and asked why I was drugged up and out of it. It was simple but it made me sleepy and loopy. She asked Emily who said I wasn’t feeling well but the drugs made me blurt out why.”
“It was quite funny at the time, he’s acting like Emily has doped him up to shut him up. She tells me she gave him some strong cough syrup and it’s just made him a little groggy and loopy. He sits up giggled and says I got snipped and then laid back down like that was totally normal. Few minutes later he was giving me details of what they did.”
“You did not...” Casey said.
“Yeah, I did…I was quite mortified the next morning when Emily told me.”
“I bet you were. So, no more babies?”
“Nope. Six is plenty.”
“I agree.” Emily said.
Brooklyn whined and Casey got up. “I know, Uncle Casey can’t feed you. You’re not even a day old and your already acting like your daddy.”
Savannah smiled but Juliet was quickly behind her sister.
“Are you okay Bells?”
“Yeah, thought about what my mother though when she had us, when she chose to split us up.”
“But you have her back, that’s what matters. Based on what you’ve told me your mother did what she felt was best, it just backfired.”
“Yeah, I just can’t fathom splitting them up, can’t imagine how hard that was or how hard adoption was, I can’t fathom that either.”
“Pft, Robert and I would take them in a heartbeat because there is no way I’d allow that.”
“If they didn’t, I would.” Savannah said.
“Do you plan to adopt one day?” I asked.
“Maybe, I have thought about it but then again I kind of like the freedom to travel, see the world, and explore. Anyways, I am going home so I can sleep for like three days. I’m sure I’ll be over soon though.”
“Okay, thank you for being here and I think you’d be a good mom.”
“No problem and thank you.”
She gave us hugs, gave them kisses and left. Casey didn’t stay much longer either, before he was heading home.
Emily and I got to go home the next day and settle in with newborns again, once home Gabriel and Nathaniel had a few moments, but they warmed up quite well. We kept them all home for a few weeks, just to let them know it’s not because they were being replaced or because we cared less. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, but it was how we liked things.
Casey welcomed Spencer Chase on his birthday at 3 am, he was a big boy at almost 9 pounds, it was our turn to nag him about sharing his birthday since both Emily and I shared a birthday with one of ours. Spencer was also very close to Casey in looks, boy was going to be a heartbreaker for sure.
