Chapter 44 – I’m…what?
POV:  Zac
Word count: 2876

November 1, 2013; Friday

We were at the studio our task was to ensure the equipment from the trailer was ok, it was all set up and we were playing through songs to make sure the keyboards and guitars were fine and the drums. Emily was in the office with Alexander finding us a temporary bus; it would be more traditional size but it would have to do for just what we needed.

“Drums ok?” Casey asked.

“Yes. No dents, scratches, I did have to replace a few clips but nothing major. The trailer was pretty packed and nothing apparently shifted much.”

“That’s good news.”

We spent several more hours checking, playing, and determining if anything needed to be replaced. The piano was the hardest part because it was off tune and Taylor was tampering with it to make sure it wasn’t a serious problem. About 11:30 Emily came to the door and I got up.

“What’s up?”

“Did you forget about my doctor’s appointment today?”

“You have one today?”

“Yes. We were going to grab lunch and then go there, Alexander can’t be in the room without you and unless you keep him here.”

“It should be fine, there about to take a break anyway.”

She turned and headed up-stairs and I told them I’d be gone for a few hours, I then went up and changed quickly to a fresh shirt at least. We got lunch at Caz’s and we were at her 2pm appointment ten minutes early but it was at the OB’s office.

“I thought your appointment was with your primary…”

“No. I wouldn’t have needed you if it was that. I’m actually a few weeks early but it should be fine.”

I hated OB appointments and had pretty much avoided them until she came in for the pregnancy, I kept Alexander entertained while she filled out the paperwork and we waited. When called back I considered waiting in the room but given the giggles from the other women I got up and followed her, much to her surprise.

“You could have stayed in the waiting room.”

“Yeah, I don’t like being sized up but six other pregnant women.”

She giggled and followed the nurse; they got her weight and did the normal stuff before being put in a room, where she stripped down and covered up with this paper thin material. Alexander sat in my lap where I had a video playing on the phone, he liked them sometimes and since it was clearly getting nap time as well as he nursed before we left the restaurant. Dr. O’Brian came in and sat down, greeted us both and then opened her chart.

“You made your appointment pretty early, was there a reason?”

“We had a wreck the 15th of October and I’ve had some very mild cramping. I wasn’t sure if it was maybe my cycles starting again, but nothing.”

“When you made the appointment I had my nurse pull the records, the cat scans didn’t show anything abnormal, but the blood work however did.”

I looked up at them because the hospital had said nothing about her blood work being off and by the look on her face, they hadn’t to her either.

“What do you mean the blood work wasn’t?”

“Your HCG levels were elevated some, but I want to run them again because it could have been just high it does happen. I’ll have the nurse draw some blood and have the lab process it while we finish your exam. Beyond the cramping was there anything else?”

“No.”

“Ok, let me get the blood first.”

I adjusted Alexander onto my shoulder where he was trying to fall asleep, that worked and I could hear the steady breathing when he fell asleep. I replied to a few texts from Casey asking where something was while they finished up with her. I was cool to sit where I was because I didn’t want to move much with him asleep. When they finished with the physical portion they sent us to the front to wait for the blood work, I shot a text to Taylor and Isaac letting them know we were waiting. It was close to three before they called us back and to the doctor’s office, Alexander was beginning to wake up but just laying there. We sat down and the doctor sat also, reviewed the notes and then looked at us.

“The good news is your blood work is all fine, your sugar is a little high but you did say you ate before coming in so not a problem.”

“Is the HCG level lower?”

“No, it’s higher and we did a quantitative and qualitative test and both indicate that you’re pregnant.”

I blinked several times, had I heard him correctly? No, I’d misunderstood that for sure.

“I…but…are you sure?” Emily asked.

“According to the HCG levels, yes if you’d like I can have a sonogram done to determine how far along you are. You really haven’t had periods because your breastfeeding him. So, it could have been anytime.”

“I...I haven’t been sick and no symptoms at all.”

He smiled. “Each pregnancy is different and you may not be sick at all during this one. It may be later on or it may come and go. Your levels weren’t that high at the hospital would you like the sonogram?”

“Please…”

Evidently he knew that would be her answer as he took us to a room although I was pretty sure when, given the wreck and our schedule. He did a quick sonogram; there was no point in checking for things beyond how far along she was.

“I am going five to seven weeks. I can give you a more exact date the next time your in.”

I was sure we were both a little stunned it was evident as she made a follow up in December, because we really wouldn’t be able to until then, we had the rest of the tour. She had asked if it was safe to breast feed Alexander while pregnant and it was, so she was fine there. I strapped Alexander in to his car seat, realized in eight or so months there would be two car seats here. It was clear we were stunned because we just sat there.

“I…I didn’t…He wasn’t lying was he?” She asked.

“I heard the same thing.”

“So…uh…I thought we were going to wait a while, couple years.”

“Well, that was the idea. I think I know when too.”

“Oh I know when it happened, the afternoon in the bus after skydiving. It’s the right time frame.”

“How come most couples don’t know when and yet we seem too?” I asked.

“Well, realistically we didn’t know with Alexander. It was just deduction same with this one.”

“So, we’re having a second baby? This is real.”

“Yes.”

I took a deep breath; it was another reason for us to really ensure the safety of them and to get rid of Ian. It was a reason for me to be more careful and not as secretive. We returned to the studio but under the premise that we were not out of the risk area and before we told anyone we wanted to be sure. Even though the doctor was sure she was not at any increased risk for a miscarriage the wreck could have done anything.

“Damn that took forever.” Casey said.

“Yeah, there was wacky blood work from the hospital so he drew some blood and ran it, wanted us to wait. Everything’s fine though, no problems.”

“Taylor found the problem with the keyboard, was a tuning issue so they fixed it and we repacked for tour. We’ll meet the rest of the crew in Philly when that show is. It’s just selected going to Epcot.”

“Robert going?”

“Yes.”

“So, what are the two of you now?”

“We are dating, just kind of exploring where it could go.”

“It’s good that you are.”

“You’re not mad or upset in any way?”

I looked up at him. “Why would I be mad or upset? I told you when we walked in I wasn’t upset. I know that you’ve been content and happy but really Casey I also know you miss things that I just can’t give you. But, uh don’t be stupid if he hurts you physically or emotionally you better tell me.”

“Did Emily tell you about Jimmy?”

“She did when I asked why you were so hesitate. You could have told me Casey, I would have helped you as well.”

He blushed slightly. “He was the only one that could distract me from you.”

“So, does Robert do the same thing?”

“When we’re out doing something, yeah he does. He’s not you that’s for sure. We have fun when we’re together but again it’s not serious, it’s just dating and seeing where it goes.”

I nudged him. “It’s more than dating.”

He smiled and blushed deeper. “Do you have any idea how I knew he was gay?”

“Not a clue since neither Emily nor I told you.”

“Well, I caught him staring at you, more specifically your very nice ass. You were actually leaning over the piano during the first couple of shows talking to Taylor about something and he was just clueless I could see him and the tightening in the pants. I kind of eased in beside him and told him you had a nice ass to look at.”

“I told Emily I was feeling like a piece of meat.”  I laughed after that, letting him know it wasn’t a serious issue.

He laughed. “You should have but he didn’t know about me either and mentioned something about a fantasy he knew would never happen. He’d apparently thought about you a couple times.”

“Why me? Taylor is the pretty one, the one everyone wants.”

He laughed. “Face it Zac, your every mans wet dream while Taylor is every woman’s.”

“Perfect!”

“Well…he did say something about a threesome, but I told him it was not likely you’d agree.”

I looked at him stunned. “Back up, he told you that?”

“He did, yes. This was before he knew about us and I couldn’t tell him. But, you never expressed a desire for that. I mean we had the chance with Max last year but it didn’t quite work the way we wanted.”

I paused on that thought. “I…well, I never thought about that. Usually Emily’s involved.”

“You could always ask I am sure she would consider it.”

I giggled, if she was anything like her pregnancy with Alexander, she would the last three months or so, but seriously I’d noticed that she was more active or more wanting too now, she also wasn’t sick. But, could I really handle 8 months of how she was with him those last few months?!

Yet, it wasn’t just Emily that was there as a block I wasn’t completely sure I could ever do that again, not even with Casey, not even with Emily.

“I’m sure she would…but...”

He looked at me. “Zac? Is everything ok?”

“Yeah. Just tired that’s all.”

He got my hand and it wasn’t a friendly gesture it was a romantic one and I was sure the evident shaking was confusing to him.

“What are you not telling us Zac? I’m sure Emily knows everything but she’s defensive toward you now, she was very adamant you had gotten enough from not telling us. You’ve been doing this a lot when I’m around, slightly shaking and you’ve even cringed away from me.”

Casey was as close to me as my brothers so I lead him to one of the conference rooms where I told him what happened. Considering I had kept it from him, he took it like everyone else. Calm and compassionate and understanding, more than I expected given how much time had passed between the event and him being told.

“Are you ok?”

“Yeah, the bruising has basically gone, it’s still healing but it’s not bad.”

“What about emotionally?”

I smiled. “Emily has made sure that I’m fine. I just didn’t want a lot of people to know. I don’t mind telling people I trust about you and I, but this was something I wanted. What he did I didn’t want.”

He moved beside me and rubbed my back. “But it’s not your fault and it’s not something you asked for. I don’t care what he told you, he made the choice to do that on his own without your actions. He just used those to justify him.”

“I just want him out of my life. I don’t know who the hell he is, I just…”

“You want him gone so your safe and so there safe.”

“Exactly. Casey I really don’t want to take Alexander to Epcot but I can’t let Ian run our lives. Although, I did talk to mom and she agreed the second day she would keep him at the hotel so us adults can ride things.”

“Yeah, not a whole lot he can ride there. Couple little kiddy rides.”

“Yeah, she’s going to keep the ones that can’t ride, allow us to have a day. She and Dad are getting the first day.”

He smiled. “Ok. Well, we should head back to the studio and be productive.”

I grinned and we got up and went back to work, prepping and making sure we had things ready to leave Sunday. Emily and I went home about 6:45, where we fed Alexander and ourselves and then sat down.

“I told Casey what happen at the hotel and in LA.”

“You needed too, he’s your best friend Zac and he deserved to know. Did he take it well?”

“About as good as you did, he was clearly pissed off at Ian.”

She smiled. “He will protect you Zac and you know that.”

“He told me something Robert said that one of his fantasies was a three some.”

She giggled. “Honestly Zac, I don’t think you should consider that just yet.”

“I’m not because I don’t even know if I could again, with anyone.”

I felt her lips against my neck. “You know I could always see, assuming that you want too.”

I shivered in a good way; clearly the idea was something I was ok with.

“Maybe after the tour.”

“I didn’t mean right now anyway, you need a little more time and to think about it too. If you want too, I will. If you think it would be better if it was Casey, well, I’d have to ask and I’m not sure how Robert would feel.”

I glanced over at her and giggled. “If he was watching he probably wouldn’t mind. But, I think I’d like to just not worry about it. How are you feeling? You were sick as hell last time at this point.”

“Ironically, I don’t feel sick at all. The only time I can remember is a queasy feeling a few weeks ago. I really had no idea and no warning, I mean this is…sudden.”

“We can most certainly say this little one is a surprise.”

“Definitely, well Alexander was too.”

Speaking of him, he had been playing contently with his toys and then at his name he was suddenly climbing up between us and settled down.

“Dear god I hope the second one is a mama’s baby, I don’t know if I can hold two and drums at the same time.”

She laughed. “Get use to it. I’m going to take him and get him ready for bed. You want to lock up and then turn everything off?”

“Sure.”

She got up and left the room, taking him with her and I did just what I said I was, I put up the leftovers and then made sure the doors were all locked and then shut everything off. She was nursing him when I came in and I went ahead and stripped to boxers and got my teeth brushed and hair combed. She probably had already done those things. I laid him down in the crib when he was done. He turned over and settled down quickly, and yet a few months from now I’d be doing the same thing to another little baby.

She and I both lay down and I found my hand on her abdomen. I couldn’t say that I was unhappy about this, we’d wanted to wait a bit but we really weren’t using anything to stop it, so we knew it was always possible. I was glad that at this point she wasn’t gravely ill because if she continued to nurse Alexander for a few more months she couldn’t be sick. I wondered if she planned to continue breastfeeding with the new addition or if she’d choose bottles.

“Emily, are you ok with this?”

She looked over at me. “I am, I just wish that Ian wasn’t around. But, let’s hope before this little one arrives he’s not.”

“I can agree with that.”

She cuddled up close to me and left my arm over her waist. She was asleep before me and I laid there pondering how things would be different now, it was shortly before midnight when I closed my eyes.
