Chapter 88 – The Waiting Game
POV: Zac
Word count: 3175

July 7, 2014

Dad had warned me with Alexander that pregnant women could be grouchy and ill, yet during her pregnancy with Alexander she wasn’t that way, right now though more than a week over due she was. They always joke about poking me and waking up some grizzly bear, compared to how she was right now I was a cuddly little kitten.

The grouchy and ill Emily had shown Friday morning when I casually suggested that perhaps we should remain in Tulsa instead of going to Maysville. I got an hour long lecture on how Maddi was a great friend and she was not missing her wedding, albeit a small court house affair, because little bean couldn’t decide when he wanted to arrive. So, I packed all of us an overnight bag and drove the three hours to Maysville, the drive was tense but Casey and Robert helped ease it a bit yet she snapped on Casey when he too was dumb enough to suggest not going.

Truthfully, I was glad we did. She had worn the sundress and sandals Maddi had sent to her weeks ago, it fit well. She looked beautiful and the three of us told her that but she insisted she was a balloon. Maddi was gorgeous in her off white sundress and heels. Cody had gone with simple blue jeans and a button up shirt. It wasn’t their first wedding so they wanted simple. It was held at a park just below the church and it was very nice. Afterwards was a reception with friends and family where we partied it up, my family came down to celebrate and Taylor and I set off the fireworks that night. It was a combination reception and fourth of July party, Emily did some dancing but not much. Maddi and everyone else totally understood.

As for today… Casey and Robert were keeping Alexander at home today; she and I were at the studio and came in at 8. Thankfully, Sean had kept the warehouse clean and organized, the studio was clean thanks to me, and the offices were all clean so she had nothing to be pissed about. Our purpose was to discuss Australia and make some definitive plans.

The meeting was supposed to start at 9, Taylor was running late. She was sitting on the sofa being agitated. Isaac was being very smart this morning. He had said hey, but hadn’t asked how she was or how she felt. Taylor on the other hand walked in; saw her and that was his first question. Clearly Ike and I tried to communicate telepathically for him not to ask that question but it must not have worked!

“How the hell do you think I am Tay? I’m tired, I’m still a giant balloon, Casey thinks my penguin waddle is cute as fuck, and I’m hot as hell. No. I’m not ok.”

He paused and glanced at Ike and I, reassurance? Warning? I wasn’t sure but Ike and I were not saying shit. He should know better than to ask, considering he had four of his own!

“You are not a balloon Emily and I happen to agree with Casey, as I recall Natalie had a bit of a penguin walk as well and I remember it being quite cute and in some cases sexy.”

Ike and I slid down in our seats because her expression darkened, I wondered if she wanted to slap him or something.

“Fuck you Taylor.”

I quickly kicked his foot. “We need to get started with the meeting, her doctor’s appointment is at 1 and we’re going home after that. So, less chatty and more worky.”

Emily glared at me and I was positive she understood what I was doing, but she didn’t say anything. Isaac went over travel plans and hotels and we approved to add a few more interviews while we were there. Emily seemed to get more and more agitated though. It was clear Isaac and Taylor understood that as well. Yet, do we say anything?

“Ems, is there something you want to add?” Isaac asked, cautiously.

“Just that you’re filling up the schedule with work and you’re forgetting that we’ll be there. It’s not just me either, Nikki and Natalie and your children are going as well. At least pretend that we’ll be there by giving us all at least one day that we won’t have to sit in our hotels and be bored while you three are trucked around the damn continent.”

“She does have a point, we are filling every day and while Emily will be there the whole time, our wives won’t be.” Taylor said.

“We can rearrange and maybe cancel some stuff; I think we agreed to do one show twice.” Ike said.

So we spent the last hour rearranging and seeing if some places were cool with putting us off or changing the time. She seemed much more pleased with the changes and that seemed to help improve her mood slightly.

Emily and I left about 12, I couldn’t deny the little waddle was cute but I reframed from saying anything and instead helped her into the truck. We got lunch on the way to the doctor and she was agitated because our appointment was at 1, but it was almost 2 before she was called back. We went through the normal check up, making sure she was physically fine. The nurse checked to see if she was even dilated at all, and zip. Dr. O’Brian came in at 2:30.

“I apologize for being so late today; emergency C-section this morning put me behind here.”

She didn’t say a single word and I said it was fine, watched him review the chart, and listened as he asked about how she felt and if she was feeling any type of pain, which she wasn’t.

“42 weeks is the general latest we go, but looking back at some of the results we could have mislabeled your conception date. You’ll be officially 42 weeks over the weekend but if your conception was a bit later in October it’s possible you’re not that far.”

“I’m acutely aware of that.” She snapped.

He bristled a bit. “I’ll be out of town early next week, assuming you have not gone into labor I am scheduling you to be induced the 17th.”

“That’s not what I want.” She said.

“I am aware of that Mrs. Hanson but with your previous blood pressure problems and the threat of preeclampsia I would rather you be scheduled and not need it than have to put you in. I should honestly do that this week but I know how you feel about being induced, however I can’t keep letting you go. Evidently Alexander was keen on being on time and this one is not.”

She didn’t want to be induced unless absolutely necessary, I wasn’t sure why exactly but I guess she wanted to go into labor when her body said it was time, not when a doctor did. He scheduled the induction for July 17 at 8 am; I hadn’t failed to notice that he did that after her birthday. She asked a few questions about the induction process, before we bid him farewell and left. I helped her into the truck and we sat there a moment.

“Least it’s after your birthday.”

“Yeah.”

“Alright Emily, spill it. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing is wrong, just tired and I want to be done being pregnant for a while.”

“So, you’re saying we don’t need to let little bean get about 11 months and then have another one?”

“That happens your getting snipped, end of the subject.”

I giggled. “I know you’re antsy but the doctor said everything was fine, we’re just waiting for him to decide he wants to be born.”

“Can you swing by the park before we go home?”

“Sure, Agent Roberts is following us let me sent him a text because he thought we were headed straight home.”

I sent him a text message to alert him of the change in plans and then we left, swinging by the park. He parked near us and then sat down on a bench behind us about fifty or so feet. She’s waddled down to the bench beside the river. That waddle really was cute and the way it made her hips sway was sexy. She sat down and leaned back, sighed. I sat down beside her, put my arm behind her intentionally.

“You shouldn’t watch my hips when we’re in public.”

I adjusted the pants I had on and kissed her temple. “Not my fault your little waddle makes your hips sway perfectly.”

“I could be rude, but I won’t be.”

It got quiet and I wondered if there was something she needed to say or something wrong, but I left her alone and eventually she took a deep breath.

“So, the FBI can assign a guard to you for the duration of our Australian stay. They sent over a list of available agents but Agent Roberts is available and I requested him. But, they won’t assign anyone to me.”

“But he wants our newborn, what good would that do if no one is with you?”

“Honestly I don’t want some guy there Zac. I want freedom in the hotel to feed him and not need to make some huge fucking deal about it. There wasn’t a single female name on the list.”

“Well, Casey is also going.”

“Yes, but legally Zac he can’t do anything if they show up. He can only call the local authority.”

“So, what are you saying that you’re not going to go? Because you know damn well that’s not going to work for me.”

She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “I spoke with Daly actually when I requested Roberts and I asked him if Eliza could be assigned or if she could be cleared somehow. She’s technically on leave.”

“Eliza?!” I asked

I was completely stunned that that was her idea because she hadn’t said anything about trusting her enough for that.

“I haven’t said anything to Eliza and Daly is still checking to see if it’s possible. It’s great that Casey is going with us and I appreciate that he is, but he can’t legally do anything. If he attacks anyone then he’ll be arrested in Australia. The agents have some creditability or something that ensures there not going to be arrested on sight. I trust Casey to be there when he gets hungry, but I don’t trust the other people on that list to have the same respect for me. Sure, Casey may stare but I won’t feel weird about it.”

“But you trust Eliza? Come on Emily think about that for a moment.”

She watched the water for several minutes and I wondered where this came from, it was out of left field to me! I wasn’t even sure I’d feel ok leaving her with Eliza and Alexander didn’t seem to really want to be near her either. She smoothed her hands over the shirt, probably coaxing him to move away from a rib or a bladder.

“I have thought about it and we’ve talked a lot, she’s not mentioned David and I think it would be a good time for us to really connect. We’re going to be traveling a lot and I understand, but you can’t worry about me and perform too. Likewise, I don’t believe Ian will try anything in Australia, for starters that’s an expensive trip and we know he’s broke.”

“Come on Ems.”

“Don’t argue with me right now.”

“I’m not arguing, I’m questioning this decision to want to take off for four weeks with her. You haven’t spent much time with her face to face, Alexander doesn’t really go near her when she’s here, and this is four weeks Emily, you can’t run from her if she pisses you off.”

“Believe me I questioned that idea when it came up too. But, maybe that’s what we need Zac. Four weeks you’re going to be touring, performing, interviews, and radio shows and I’ll be bored. It will give me a chance to connect to her, give her and Alexander a chance to connect and Casey would be there too.  She’ll have her own hotel room, so if we do argue she has a place to go for a bit. I can’t say I fully trust her but I’m never going to know if it’s just random bits and times when we talk.  She really seems sincere Zachary. I didn’t think I wanted her around at all but lately I’ve been regretting not knowing her before, regretting that David kept her from me.”

I looked at her and we sat there for several more minutes. I couldn’t argue with the logic behind that and she had a point, there would be her own room. I did trust Emily and if she felt this would help, maybe it would.

“If you believe it’s the right thing to do, then we can do it. You do have the option of sending her home if she gets too bad.”

“That is true.”

“Are you ready to go home? You look like you need a nap.”

“Nap? No, what I want isn’t a nap.” Her hand slid up my thigh and to my inner thigh.

“Why do I get the feeling Casey may need to watch Alexander a while longer?”

“I wouldn’t torture him like that Zachary, it would be torture if we’re having sex and he can’t join. I’ll wait until Alexander is asleep.”

“Don’t have to return right now…”

“Yes, we do. They expected us hours ago.”

“I tried!” I got up, helped her up and I was sure the sway she had going back wasn’t from the waddle.

I drove home and when we came inside the house, Alexander ran to us for a few minutes of hugs and kisses and then he ran off to continue playing. Robert and Casey were sitting in the living room, cartoons on the TV.

“You two are late, good news?”

“Doctor was behind he had an emergency c-section today. As for us, no baby unless little bean feels like gracing us with his lovely little face, however, he scheduled an induction for the 17th in case he’s not already here.” I said.

“You’re not ready to snap anyone’s heads off are you Ems?” Robert asked.

“Not right now, keep on I might be.” She then smiled at him sweetly.

He smiled and didn’t push it. We sat down in the living room and Alexander kept playing.

“So, names?” Robert asked.

“We’ve narrowed the list down but still can’t decide. But, I think we are leaning toward Matthew as one. Just middles names that fit well.”

He shook his head. “We can just call him Matthew Little Bean Hanson.”

“Funny, very very funny.” Emily said.

He smiled and didn’t push it, although it did have a nice ring to it. I doubted anyone would understand and in twenty years he would probably want to kill us both for that. They did try to help us but none of the names sounded OK. It grew quiet after a while and I changed Alexander about 4:30 and sat there in the floor.

“So, Emily wants to bring Eliza with us.” I said.

Both of them paused and looked at her, confusion and concern on both of their faces.

“Is that wise Ems?” Casey asked.

“I’m not sure Casey. She’s been very good when we’ve talked; she’s asked me questions about most everything but David. I know she has questions about him and what happened but she’s not asking. She’s acutely tuned in to the watch beeping, because if it gets too high she stops. It’s like she’s realized.”

“Well, look at it from her view. She knew you were out there and she knew she could reach you anytime she really wanted too, even after the whole blow up with you she knew you were here and you were ok. But when Ian took you and when she thought you were actually dead, the reality is that you may not always be there. She took your presence for granted, thought she had all the time in the world, but she doesn’t.” Robert said.

“Same thing I thought.” I said.

“Makes sense, but this is overseas and if things happen you’re pretty screwed on getting away from her.” Casey said.

“I know, but we haven’t argued and I think time is what we need. Added, her and Grant are arguing like hell over everything so maybe it’s good for her too.”

“I thought they were like the perfect couple.” Robert said.

“No. She wants to make some changes and he doesn’t. He’s virtually married to his career and she wants more.”

“You’re a bad influence.” Casey said.

She rolled her eyes and laid back, clearly tired. “I don’t see how.”

He rolled his eyes. “You went and found the one man that’s like perfect for you, gives you anything you want, fawns all over you, and really he could be ready to pass out but touch him the right way and he’ll do whatever you want.”

Emily smiled at him. “I’m not giving her Zac and if he knows what’s good for him he’ll be sure the one he’s touching is the right one.”

I giggled. “I’d never confuse the two of you honey. Aside from the hair there are other differences.”

“Well, right now there is a major one, little bean.” Casey said.

Emily laughed. “He shouldn’t even if little bean wasn’t there. Physically we’re different too and I think he rather likes those differences.”

“I noticed a few of those too.”

“That’s good that he won’t confuse them then.” Robert said.

I could feel Emily’s sharp little nails in my neck and shivered some; she was in a little bit better of a mood, which was good. Casey and I chose to fix dinner, but I saw Robert watching and knew he still had some lingering insecurities. Ones that Casey didn’t help with, Emily called him out when she caught him staring at my ass, which caused us both to blush. Yet, she also called Robert out once too, so it wasn’t like it was just Casey.  Dinner went very well, there was light conversation and Alexander ate very well. He was actually changed and in bed by 8, because he didn’t take a long nap.

Robert and Casey left about 8:15 and by 8:30 I was naked and pinned down in our bed; did I mind being pinned down? Not at all. I did wonder though if she would try to use sex to induce labor, not that I’d mind that either. I knew that once he was here there could be a gap afterwards because she was going to be tired and there was time after Alexander.

Sometime around midnight I remember curling up next to her and falling asleep.
