Chapter 91 – Penny’s Gift
POV:  Emily
Word count: 4350

July 17, 2014

Isabella had a strong set of lungs; in my sleep deprived state I didn’t change her fast enough. But she was fairly quick to calm down. Casey and Zac however were both woken up by her crying.

“Sorry, I’m a little slow.”

“You could have woken me up.” Zac said.

“You two were sleeping so well, I couldn’t. But, um now that you are awake I think I’d like to sleep.”

Zac got her from me. “Just ate?”

I nodded. “Isaac has Alexander and they’re coming up later, Taylor said he would be up about ten.”

“Ok. Just sleep.”

I wouldn’t get much either way but apparently she was also a Daddy’s baby because he didn’t have to wake me up until over two hours later. It was a very good nap! She and I both got to eat this time as Casey had gone to get breakfast. Taylor sent Zac a text saying they were on the way about 8:45. By the time they arrived she was fed and Zac had changed her clothes as well, but the nurse had come to get her for a checkup and to give her first shots. Taylor said Penny didn’t know she was a girl, she was thinking we’d had a boy. It was Ezra and Penny that came running into the room first; poor Casey nearly fell out of the chair. I hugged both of them who had climbed into the bed with me, but had been very careful and mindful.

“Aunt Emily!” Penny said, her to0ne of voice said she was excited.

“Hey there princess, I heard you tried to stay awake last night.”

“Mommy didn’t wake me up, she let me fall asleep.”  She pouted.

Taylor and Natalie came in with River and Viggo and Natalie sighed.

“I’ve been fussed at all morning because I didn’t wake her up back up the moment I got the text.”

“Where is he?!” Penny asked.

“The nursery had to do a check up and give some shots, Uncle Zac is waiting on them and they’ll be back.”

She rolled her eyes and sighed, the others giggled. Ezra just sat quietly, he really had been a lot clingier since
Aaron had slipped that I was dead.

“Hey buddy, you ok?”

He nodded. “Are you?”

“I’m fine.”

“How are you though?” Natalie asked.

“Tired, I did get a two hour nap this morning.”

“Lucky! Did you switch to bottles?”

“No. Just slept two hours, Zac obvious was the one holding.”

Penny was bouncing and agitated, she was always excited for new babies though, and the little mother in her
was just completely giddy. Zac finally returned about ten with her, but the white blanket was ours.

“I get the feeling everyone was waiting on me.”

“I want to hold him!” Penny said.

“She’s very antsy Uncle Zac.” Casey said.

Taylor and Natalie smiled; Viggo and River were just oblivious to what was going on. Viggo wasn’t even a year old yet and River, while he was four he didn’t seem to think this was a big deal. Zac got her out of the basinet now she was in the room.

“Who do I hand this baby too first? Taylor? Natalie?”

“ME!” Penny whined.

“Zac, quite being a brat and let her hold her cousin, she’s been dying to.” I said.

He walked over and kneeled down, she was sitting beside me on the bed still and Zac laid Isabella in her arms.

“He’s so heavy!”

“Hey Penny, you remember how you kept wanting Aunt Emily to have a girl? Your mom said you were disappointed when the doctor said we were having a boy.”

“I remember Uncle Zac. The doctor was mean.”

“The doctor was wrong; Aunt Emily and I had a little girl. Meet your cousin, Isabella.”

I was certain Taylor caught that shock look on her face; she’d wanted someone to have a girl for years. Yet, everyone had boys.

“A girl?!”

“Yes. Surprise Penny you got the little girl cousin you wanted.”

She was so happy and she sat there and held here until Natalie asked to hold her too, even Ezra wanted too then. Viggo kind of showed some interest and River just wanted a picture. Everyone was adjusting to her being here, and not being a boy. She was good for an hour and a half and then she started crying and Taylor brought her to me.

“I get the feeling my whispering skills won’t work with this cry.”

“Nope, feeding time.”

Casey handed me the blanket and Zac helped until she was latched, I kept covered but a small place for me to see her, because I didn’t want her obscured from me totally.

“She has good lungs.” Natalie said.

“Oh yeah, nothing like Alexander, she gets mad quickly.” Casey said.

Zac sighed. “I guess Alexander got your calm personality and Isabelle took the other side?”

“Maybe, then again she may calm down some.”

They left about 10:30 and when she was done the nurse let me shower and I got to put my own clothes on, something comfortable. I had just gotten done settling back in the bed when I heard Alexander crying. Zac and I both looked up and Isaac walked in with him, followed by Nikki with Everett and Monroe.

“What happened to him?” Zac asked.

“He started whining before we left, he wants his mommy.”

He handed him to me and he held on to me for a few moments before he was fine and then he realized there was a baby in the room, he cried until Isaac brought her over for him to see her. Even when they held her he didn’t seem to like it, when I fed her next, covering the same way he tried to stand beside me before I had him sit down.

“I wish Everett had been that way.” Nikki said.

“I wish any of them had been that way!” Isaac said.

“Maybe being around the twins and Elijah and then all of the other little ones really helped and right now he’s not at home with the baby, so it may totally change when she comes home with us.”

“Good point.” She said.

We got some pictures of them with her and they left about 1:30, it was past lunch time and Alexander didn’t seem to mind going with them. I took several more pictures while she was awake and sent them to Maddi, who sent me a Skype request back.

“Hey! I figured you’d be asleep.”

“She’s not letting that happen and I have napped. But I figured you’d want to see more pictures I guess I can do video now.”

I panned it around and Zac and Casey waved and then I let the camera settle on her, lying on her blanket snug and warm.

“Oh my, pictures just don’t do her justice! Seriously, did Zac help you at all with her? She’s like a carbon copy of you.”

“I believe I helped, pretty sure I helped somehow.” Zac said.

She giggled. “Well, she didn’t help with Alexander; he’s your carbon copy. I guess it was time she got a mini-me.”

“She has my nose…” Zac pouted.

“Alexander got my eyes, which I think Zac’s fine with.” I said.

“Does she have your eyes as well or did Zac contribute there?”

“Nope. She’s all mom in the eyes.” I said.

“She got mom’s hissy fits too.” Casey chimed in.

“Really?” Maddi asked.

“Oh yeah, she can pit a hissy fit, woke them up because I wasn’t fast enough.”

“Fun. Alexander can be wild man and she can just scream and yell like her mother.”

Everyone thought that was funny but me, as I’d be the one dealing with those fits and tantrums the most.

“How is Ginger monster doing?”

“She’s doing well actually, I sent her birthday invite out but then I remembered you’ll be like six thousand
miles away in Australia.”

“Hey! I can always get her a kick ass gift while we’re there.”

“You don’t have too.”

“I know, we’ll do something for sure, we’re going to be home all of August and you have to come up for the weekend. Bring Max, bring everyone.”

“Deal. You get some rest Ems; you’re going to need it.”

I smiled. “I will. I just wanted you to get a better view.”

“Hey, that picture was awesome.”

I smiled and we said our byes, and I re-skyped each older brother for a bit too. Eliza was coming up late but I had just hung-up when Robert knocked.

“I bring food. Casey called in an order and I was on my way.”

“Food is good. They brought her this awesome lunch and Zac got to nibble.”

“I brought them something too.”

“Figures.” Casey said.

He gave out plates and sat one down for me, but then he sat a big gift bag down.

“I said when little bean arrived, I’d buy something. Well, little bean is here.”

“You really didn’t have too.” I said.

He only smiled and then picked her up and sat down near Zac, I wasn’t oblivious to why. He wanted Zac to be close so they felt comfortable with him holding her. I sat the plate aside and went for the package first.  I pulled out the pink receiving blankets and the pink sheets from the top and then under that was just clothes.

“What did you do, buy every outfit they had?”

He smiled. “Basically, I know you don’t have anything for a little girl and she can’t wear blue and green all of her life.”

I laid out suit after suit, packages of girl onesie, dresses, little frilly suits, pink socks and even a pair of patent leather shoes.

“You went way above and beyond.”

He smiled. “Not really. It’s what I would have done anyway.”

I rolled my eyes at him.

“Did you bring the white box I asked you to bring?” Casey asked.

“I did. It’s in the bag.”

Zac and I both gave him a puzzled look. “You did not get something else did you?” Zac asked.

“No. It’s not from me actually.”

I found that box in the very bottom and I laid everything back inside except that one, I opened it and found this adorable pink dress with a beaded neckline and puffy sleeves. Included was a diaper cover and I found little white socks with puffy fringe.

“I asked him to pick up the shoes.” Casey said.

“If it’s not from you, then who is it from?” I asked.

“There should be a card as well.”

I had to move the dress to find the card lying on the bottom; I recognized the handwriting on the front as Velma’s. My name and Zac’s written very neatly across the front. I opened it and found a card that was meant for a girl, how could she have known? The inside writing was pretty generic, the congratulations you have a daughter, but her handwriting was written on the left side.

To Emily & Zac,
I know you told me the doctor said you were having a little boy, but I don’t believe them. You were carrying this one differently, may not matter to some but I noticed. Granted, I could be wrong and if so, this little suit can just be put up until you do have a little girl.

Velma

“Her sister brought it to me before your baby shower; she said she found it in her things and felt that you deserved to have it since it was bought for you. She knew that her death was hard on you and she asked me to give it to you when I felt it was ok. No better time than now, because little bean there needed a dress to wear home.”

“Well, I was going to buy a bring home suit today but I don’t think I need too. It should fit her and that would be perfect.” Zac said.

“Yeah.” I said.

To help ease the pain I looked at some of the onesie, which were mostly funny sayings which was good but god I wished Velma was here with us.

“Oh, Daddy’s princess has arrived; this is too cute and will be so true.”

They finished before me but I did eat what he brought me. Amanda came in shortly after I got done and stole her from Zac.

“My daughter and you just took her.”

“Yep. You get the next 18 years with her all day long. I won’t have that.”

She sat down on the bed with her. “She’s too quiet.”

“She just ate and got changed.”

“Sean was going to come up with me but he wasn’t sure how you’d feel what with him being an employee and all.”

“He’ll see her soon enough, I’ll have to go in sometime.”

Casey and Zac both turned and looked at me. “Uh, since when? Six weeks.” Zac said.

“Since you can’t finalize the plans for everyone and if I wasn’t there you’d get all the way to Aussie without your drums or without underwear.”

“Well, he can live without underwear.” Amanda said.

“Three weeks minimum, not until you can pass off some feeding times to me.”

I rolled my eyes and Amanda just smiled. About four Eliza walked in and she had to do a little spin for me. Her badge and gun were secured on her side now.

“I didn’t think you were being reinstated for a few more weeks.” Zac said.

“I didn’t either. I didn’t think I was being reinstated period actually. I saw Mr. Daly this morning and after a long talk, my agreement to redo some training, and some courses in human behavior he reinstated me until the end of the year.”

“Why just until then?” Casey asked.

“It was my decision, I asked for the time to reevaluate where I am and what I am doing. He agreed that reflecting on what I want to be will greatly help.”

“Sounds like you had a productive morning.”

“I did. How was your morning?”

“Pretty good, she woke them up for me and I got to sleep a bit.”

“You still look tired.”

“Give her a week and then evaluate how tired she looks.” Zac said.

I threw a small container of baby powder at him, and of course because it’s his luck the bottle hit his arm and he got an explosion of power all over him. Casey literally slid out of the chair he was laughing so hard and even Eliza couldn’t stop and me? Yeah, I had to laugh too. Robert and Amanda both also had uncontrolled fits of laughter.

“While you all compose yourselves, I’ll go wash the power off.”

“Totally didn’t mean for that to happen.”

“It’s ok, but you did look near zombie like when Alexander was about two weeks.”

“It was close to Halloween!”

“True, but yeah this was after Halloween.”

He went to the sink and washed off and Casey pulled himself out of the floor. When she started moving though it was Eliza that walked over and checked on her, just stood there watching her.

“She really does look like you; Aaron kind of shared a baby picture of you.”

“He had one?”

She smiled. “He has several pictures of you on his phone. Ones of you and him, you, and some of you from your wedding and even more recent ones, I assumed you knew about them.”

“Not really, I mean I know he has his nephews and now his niece.”

“He didn’t share all of them, just a few. I was rather shocked he shared any at all. He overheard me ask Ace if
there were any of you on his.”

“Ace has I think one or two.”

“Yeah, he had two. Aaron volunteered.”

“May mean there warming up to you?”

“I think what she wants is food. She’s kind of trying to eat her fist.” Eliza said.

“It’s about time actually. She’s been fairly consistent.”

She however had Casey get her out and bring her too me, I guess holding her was still too new. I wasn’t going to bother to cover up but I saw the way Zac looked at Robert and I did anyway, I wanted my own home now.

“When do you get Alexander back?” Eliza asked.

Zac giggled. “He’ll be brought over as soon as I call and say we’re home.”

“No break huh?” she asked.

“We only asked for anyone to watch him because there is so much he can get into here. They will probably send me home in the morning.”

“That soon?”

“It’s pretty standard unless there are complications, none for me. If they had done a c-section then I’d be here longer but natural births they generally send us home quick. She got a clean bill of health, so we’re good.”

“That’s good then, home is always better.”

“I miss my bed.” Zac said.

“You’ll be missing the nymph wife soon enough.” Casey said.

“Ironically, I probably won’t.”

“Yeah, he’ll be appreciative for being able to sleep past like 3, without being woken up by me.”

Another good laugh and everyone settled down. She did hold her once she was changed and comfortable again. My brother’s brought dinner up and visited for a bit and by the time she officially turned a day old it was just the three of us here.  I felt so tired that I laid down about 9; let them handle whatever she needed unless it was food, so I got to rest a bit.

July 18, 2014; 9 am

The doctor’s had done been in for their final check for me, Isabella and Zac were in the nursery now for her final check. Casey had bagged everything that we had earlier, including our things and he had taken them on to the house. Isaac agreed to bring Alexander over that afternoon; he was actually planning to take them to the aquarium in town because they had all been good. I was fine with that! There was an agent watching them as well. I was a little surprised to see Eliza come in about 9:30.

“Morning.” She said.

“You could have come to the house; I’m just waiting on Isabella.”

“I could have but then I would have to wait at the gate. I figured I would come here first. I have to report in at noon and I don’t know when they’ll let me go.”

“Ah, yeah they took her down for the final check and Dr. O’Brian’s already checked me out. I’m actually free to leave but we won’t leave without her.”

“You’ve done the birth certificates?”

“Yeah. She came in about ten last night. Zac filled everything out before he woke me up.”

“He did get the name right?”

“I checked and he did.”

“Where is your car seat?”

“It’s in the truck already; we took Alexander’s out obviously. We bought the same one he has though, goes from birth to like a hundred pounds. She’s in the middle right now but one of us will have to be back there anyway.”

“Understandable.”

She waited with me until Zac came back and declared we were ready to go. He packed up the last few items we had here and then we waited on them, he went ahead to pull the car up. I got wheeled out with her but I noticed Eliza was standing right beside me while we waited.

“Eliza?”

“Yes?”

“Why are you acting like you’re on the job already?”

“Detective Walker is right there too, I’m just extra.”

“Or something happened and no one is telling us.”

“Relax Emily; it’s nothing to be really concerned about.” Detective Walker said.

I was going to protest but Zac pulled up and parked, he put her in and adjusted the belts on her seat. Detective Walker was riding back with us, I got in behind her. Isabella seemed content for the ride home and even once there. She was gotten out, laid in her bassinet and Zac got to unpacking and putting things up, while I was commanded to just rest. Yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was up and they weren’t telling us, so when Eliza sat down I looked at her.

“You know as much as anyone else that I don’t like being lied too. You lied to me when you told me you were just extra. Detective Walker covered for you.”

Zac came down, apparently saw how I was looking at her and turned and went back up-stairs.

“It’s nothing.”

It didn’t take much to narrow my eyes to her. “I don’t have to worry about being upset right now. Don’t push it. What is going on?”

I saw her swallow and knew that look worked on her as well and she finally seemed to cave in.

“There was a package delivered to the hospital, a baby gift.”

“From?”

“Ian and Glen, the hospital was bringing it to you but it was intercepted by the agents.”

“Ok, it wasn’t hard for them to know I was there, I was registered and I am sure there watching somehow.
What was in the box?”

“The maternity suit you had on when they took you and the blanket that was in the photos that Zac got. There was a congratulations card but the hand written note promised that your new son would be theirs. They don’t know you actually had a girl.”

“Yet anyway, Zac and I asked Isaac to post later tonight that we’d welcomed a girl.”

“We suspected the same thing, but Mr. Daly said that since I was coming over a bit more often that it might be a good idea if I was reinstated in case you did need that protection. So, he reinstated me until the end of the year.”

“After that?”

“It’s a trial Emily, if I don’t pass then I don’t work for the FBI anymore. If I do pass then I can keep my job.

However, I didn’t technically lie in the hospital either; it is a chance for me to determine what I want, because I can always leave at the end of the year.”

“Why didn’t you just tell me?”

“You just had a baby Emily.”

“Yes, a baby that a crazy man wants. I need to know and I prefer to know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“So, does that mean you’re working other active cases?”

“No, I’m not working any cases at all; I am working under Agent Stewart. I report to him and he tells me
what to do and what not to do.”

I wasn’t sure how I felt about that but given that Agent Stewart was a good agent then it made it easier to handle. Zac finally came back down and brought extra clothes and blankets, diapers, and wipes.

“Isaac is on his way Alexander is getting cranky as hell and he keeps asking for one of us.”

I nodded and filled him in on what was brought and why she was reinstated, he didn’t seem happy about that. It wasn’t long before Alexander was running in and this time it was Daddy, who was more than ok to interact with him. It gave Nikki and Isaac some more time with Isabella too.  Although they didn’t stay too long before they headed back home, Alexander did seem a bit more cautious now that Isabella was at the house and especially when Eliza headed home. Amanda was coming over the next day to stay for a while since she had to work today.

About 6 I sat down to feed her and Alexander was ok for a few minutes and then he came to the love seat and whined and then cried, kept trying to get in my lap and unfortunately Zac was outside putting his car seat back in the car. I adjusted her and helped him onto the love seat, but sat him down away from her head.

“Baby.” He said.

“She’s your sister, Isabella.”

“Baby.”

Given he was standing beside me he was fine, wanted to point and say baby. When Zac came in he was still standing there, pointing and saying baby.

“I guess he got a bit jealous there?”

“Something like that, think he just wants to see her.”

“Mom said Taylor was like that with me, just wanted to see. Although I’m convinced the seesaw to the nose was because he couldn’t do that when I was little.”

I giggled and he fixed dinner for us all and once she was down I ate with them. I was so tired though.

“I moved the crib into our room, set it up where we had his. I also changed the sheets and made the bed and changed his as well. I’ll wash them tomorrow sometime.”

“Ok, are you doing his routine?”

“I can. Isaac said they tried to keep him on it but he was up early this morning and a short nap on the way home.”

It wasn’t quite bedtime for him so we let him play it out a bit more and several times he went to the basinet to check before he’d play. It was sweet in a way. I however went up-stairs for the next feeding and even as I was getting settled with her I could hear him and before long he was coming in.

“Apparently you’re not allowed to be out of sight yet.”

Alexander climbed into the bed and sat down beside me and I wondered if this was going to be a problem. He sat there with me babbling what I couldn’t understand until Zac called him for a bath and to get him ready for bed, only then did he move. He went to bed without problems and I laid her down so we could, but I was up and down all night. I was prepared for this and I knew it would be difficult, but I could do it.
