May 17, 2015: Hop Jam Festival.
Taylor paid dearly for bringing Viggo and River to the studio sick. Alexander caught it and then passed it on to Zac, who gave it to me and eventually Isabella got her first cold. Sadly, when she was sick she was extremely whiney and restless, she wanted to nurse more often and in general she was just like Zac, a big baby. Taking care of them was hard enough, going to the studio was impossible. It had taken two weeks for the four of us to feel remotely better. I was however glad that everyone was well this weekend, including Viggo and River.
The last two days had been quite busy as they usually were. I split time between the studio with the kids and wondering around different avenues and places interacting with fans, the kids were kept at the studio during that time by a family member. I was asked about them but didn’t say where they were or who had them. They chose to stream the concert and state of the band and in addition there was the Moey awards which was something they had done on their own. I liked the concept to some extent and the hilarious photos and videos were so nice with all the stuff going on. The lectures, concert, state of the band, and galleries had gone very well.
It was strange that once May arrived, Glen seemed to give up. There had been no messages, no more e-mails, no strange or abnormal packages since the calendar changed to May. It was very odd that he had been persistent for so long and then just gave up. But, Eliza had a point maybe he had given up. Ian was no longer in the picture and he had the freedom to move on. Either that or he feared that he would end up in jail or dead, after all everyone else was.
We’d gotten home late last night and I was the first one up this morning thanks to the little princess who was starving apparently. Isabella was eating very well now and she was showing some signs of wanting solids now, she actually would eat bananas and I’d gave her some before nursing this morning. She was pulling up on things and people and the scary part was we had caught her walking some at the studio between boxes where the space was small. When she finished nursing I changed the diaper, changed her into her clothes for the day and sat her down in the play area. I started breakfast for the rest of us, finishing as I heard Alexander’s feet run across the hallway. It was something I had noticed, Zac loved to be woken up by him. He never seemed to complain or have problems.
I was also glad that the sun was out because Friday and Saturday had been cloudy, windy, and there were actually tornado warnings last night so I was glad for the sun. It would make the festival much more pleasing too.
They came down about thirty minutes later, both dressed for the day and even their hair had been brushed!
“Good morning.” He said and kissed me.
“Morning to you and you.” I gave Alexander a little tickle and he giggled.
He was put in his high chair though as his plate was ready, he took the juice first and it wasn’t until we both sat down to eat that he did. She came to the table too and I had a few bananas left from the earlier and she nibbled on them a bit. Once finished we let them play until 11 and then headed to Jason’s house. Taylor had planned to be there early but he had drunk a lot last night and I wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to arrive early or not.
Jason let us inside when we arrived and we sat them down.
“Zac sat their car seats in the garage in the event that either of you want to go anywhere. There car seats are virtually identical but hers has the pink trim and his the blue.”
“No problem, we don’t have plans to leave really.” Sophia said.
“Any idea when you’ll be back?”
“Not really, I think though since there performing later that I will come back around six and get them and take them home. Eliza is with me all day and she can come home with me.”
“Not a problem, get them when you need too. You left us plenty of milk for her right?”
“I included enough to last through the night, she’s been nursing a little more and she has bananas in there too.”
“She’s on solids?”
“Just bananas right now. We’ll add once she’s eating them well and we’re certain she’s not allergic to them. She’s eaten them for the last few days without problems, but if she does show signs then ER and call me.”
“Ok. If we have any issues or concerns we will call you, since I am sure Zac will be busy.”
“He will be. If you need anything call me because he won’t have his phone most of the day.”
We stayed a few more minutes and I went over how to warm the milk up and wrote down her normal times before we left and headed to the studio. It felt weird being in my car instead of the truck, but the car seats were already in mine so it was better. However, parking was a pain and I ended up parking blocks away from the building which I didn’t like at all. He and I walked, slowly, to the studio. Fan’s stopped us several times for pictures and autographs and several followed us all the way there. I was glad when the door shut behind us and we could breathe. Taylor and Isaac were already here and so was the helpers. Eliza arrived at 12:30.
“Sorry, the Uber driver took forever and then after he picked me up he had issues down the street.”
“No problem, why didn’t you just drive?”
“Well, I figured since I was going home with you it would save you the trouble. I have an overnight bag and you can run me home tomorrow sometime.”
“That totally works for me. So, everyone’s been divided and our task is to check the merchandise booths and make sure there stocked. Glenda
called from one and needed more Hop Jam shirts.”
“Gotcha.”
That is what we did for two hours. Zac and the other two wandered around the festival talking to fans and generally being social with everyone that came out, they also made a point to visit the beer booths. Eliza and I wandered some but spent most of the time taking shirts to different stands. Amanda met us about 2 for lunch at the diner I was tired and wanting to get away from people for a bit.
“Will Zac be back at the studio soon?”
“Four, there coming to discuss their set for tonight.”
“Well, you keep saying that Zac can tell you two apart but I don’t believe you. So, I know you won’t dye your hair to match but I found these clip in hair pieces in the same shade. Got some time for an experiment?”
“He’ll know who I am by what I am wearing.”
“Covered that, I have a clean suit in the car for you both that matches.”
“Are you trying to get the man in trouble Amanda?” Eliza asked.
“No, she’s just very insistent that Zac can tell, even though you are identical to one another.”
“If you can do it quickly then fine, but I don’t have all afternoon to let you play games.”
“It won’t take long.”
We finished eating lunch and then started walking to the studio. It made me miss Velma actually, we’d done the skydiving with her sister but I still found times where I craved her company. It was great to have Amanda back, someone who understood me and understood how I worked but I missed Velma too. My phone rang and I got it.
“Hey Mad’s, how are you?”
“I feel like shit.”
“Ut oh..What’s going on?”
“Well, I feel like I’m dying of a heat stroke, it’s so hot and it’s really not that warm. I feel liked a beached whale and moving is a bitch, I can’t sit on the sofa without help getting up. I think little Dakota is using my rib cage as a pillow.”
I smiled knowing she couldn’t see me and I was safe from the pregnancy wrath. “Well, Mad’s you know little Dakota is sharing a very cramped space with little Declan and let’s face it, they don’t have much room.”
“I know..I just…oh god, wait you’re at Hop Jam today right?”
“Yes. Just had lunch with Eliza and Amanda, we are on our way back to the studio where Amanda has a plan to test Zac to see if he can tell us apart.”
“That boy will know you by your ass.” She laughed.
“I know! I know!” I laughed with her.
“I actually called for a serious reason too, not just to complain.”
“What’s up?”
“Did you feel bad because you couldn’t play with Alexander as much when you were pregnant with Isabella? I feel like I can’t do anything with
her at all. I can’t play with her in the floor, or chase after her outside, the upside is Cody is able too but I just feel bad.”
We stepped inside the studio and we went down to the office where Amanda sat me down and started fiddling with my hair.
“Yes and no, in the early months I felt ok because I wasn’t deathly sick so I could play with him more and chase after him but then by the end I felt like Zac was doing everything for him. But, you can still do things with her. Read to her, watch movies together and you can do like arts and crafts at the table. She is aware mommy’s not feeling well.”
“We do that. Watched Frozen earlier for the hundredth time earlier, god I hate that movie sometimes.”
I giggled. “Penny had me watch it when she was over last time, I think we watched it fifteen times or something. But, believe me Mad’s, Riley doesn’t believe you are ignoring her or that you don’t care. She knows you love her…Ouch! Amanda I’d like to keep my own hair.”
“Sorry.” She said.
“What is she adding?”
“Just clip in bits, they really do look like Eliza’s highlights.”
“Nice. Are you sure she loves me?”
“Yes. I am sure she loves you. She will not hate you or anything, she loves you. You’re her mommy and nothing changes that. Just be sure once the little ones are here you do spend some extra time with her.”
“Oh, I plan too. Ok, you finish and if for some chance he fails do call me when you scream and yell at him I may find that wildly entertaining and it will distract me from my misery.”
I laughed. “Deal. She loves you, I understand the heat is hot as hell but a few more weeks and you’re clear!”
“I know…I just knew you’d understand my bitching since you’ve gone through summer with both.”
“I do, believe me. Have a good afternoon.”
I hung-up and yelped as she pulled a few more strands but she finished finally. I couldn’t deny that we did look identical to each other when we had the same hair colors.
“So, clothes?”
She retrieved the blue jeans shorts and Hanson Day t-shirt and we changed right quick. She took a picture before we went to the hallway and she had us facing away from the door when they came in, laughing and talking about some random thing they’d heard but it was Isaac’s voice that said wow, I almost turned but Amanda gave me a look.
“What is this?” Isaac asked.
“It’s a little experiment for you guys.” Amanda said.
“Really?” He asked.
“Well, mostly it’s for Zac because while Emily insist that he would know who she is no matter what, I don’t think he can. I don’t think any of
you can.”
Zac giggled. “I already know which one is my wife and which is Eliza.”
“Well, let them chose first.” Amanda said.
Eliza would be the left twin and me the right, sadly Isaac and Taylor both chose her as me, but they often spent more time looking at my face versus my back side.
“Alright Zac, are your brothers right or are they wrong?”
I had to give her credit she’d not said a word or given any indication that they were wrong, her poker face was strong! Yet I smiled when his arms came around me and he pulled me against him, kissing my neck lightly.
“They were both wrong. Emily was to the right.”
“Fuck.. are you serious?” Amanda asked.
“I told you he’d know.” I said.
“Seriously? That wasn’t Emily?” Isaac asked.
She turned. “Sorry Ike.”
“How did you know Zac? I mean same clothes, no shoes, no hair bands or ties and you couldn’t even see their face.” Taylor whined.
He pulled me close and kissed my neck, clearly not wanting to tell them the way he knew, I mean he shouldn’t be ashamed that he stares at my ass, it wasn’t new information to anyone standing here.
“Was it the hair? Was there something wrong?” Amanda asked.
“They may look identical in the face and apparently the hair, which better be temporary, but physically there different. I know what Emily
looks like physically, she’s my wife.”
“Physically?” Amanda asked.
Taylor groaned and Isaac did too, clearly understanding what he meant. Eliza walked to Amanda and leaned on her shoulder some.
“What he means is our butts are different, he’ll also know by the boobs as hers are bigger because well, naturally and kids.”
“Well, let me save myself from being your traditional male tit and ass guy. In addition to those two features I can tell them apart in photos
too.”
Yeah, Amanda had to prove that point too by fetching the one she’d taken before we came out, ironically I wasn’t on the right in that one but he picked me anyway. She finally just accepted that there was no way Eliza could pass as me to him. They went to Isaac’s office while I returned to shuffling between tents.
Jason had sent us both texts all day letting us know they were OK, about 5:30 he asked if Eliza and I would like to come for dinner about 7, I agreed knowing we should be good by then. The festival was in full swing but the beer portion was open now and I knew nothing about it but Sean did and it was something he and Isaac had in common. Most of the merchandise tables were closed or soon would be. I texted Zac at 6 and told him we were heading out about 6:30 and would be at the house when he got done. I got a smiley face in return. At 6:15 I sat down at the desk with the money boxes and because I knew I was too tired I separated by booth and put the money in the safe. I would count and deposit in the morning.
“Ready?” Eliza asked.
“Yeah.”
I closed the safe and sent Zac another message saying I was out and would see him at home and I loved him. I then followed her out and gave her directions to my car. She first checked inside and outside, making sure there wasn’t any obvious changes, she then declared us passed. We got in and after some careful maneuvering I got out of the parking space and onto the street.
“It’ll be nice to spend time with Jason and Sophia, I haven’t seen them a lot.” She said.
“I agree. Added Jason is cooking, we’re in for a treat!”
“Is he a good cook?”
“Maybe the best of us all, although Christina makes the best peach cobbler.”
“About the only dessert I can make is pre-mixed cookies and then I still mess up somehow.”
“I learned early but I didn’t really learn until I was with Craig’s mom and on my own. It is far cheaper to buy groceries than it is to eat out for
every meal.”
“I agree.”
I made it out of the festival area and took the expressway to the right exit, the weather all weekend had been rainy and stormy, last night had been bad but today had been pleasant that is until I got off the expressway and then it began to rain again. It was the last thing I wanted to see, I had enjoyed the warmer weather today and I didn’t want to be driving home in tornado weather or anything with the kids.
“Every time I don’t want rain, I get it.”
“I know, does me the same way.” She said.
“Hopefully it’s just rain and if it escalates hopefully we’re at least home by then.”
I was headed down the road toward the gated community when my phone pinged, but I couldn’t answer right now and it was in my pants pocket anyway. I went to slow down for the approaching curve and the car wouldn’t slow, I pressed the brake pedal down to the floor almost and yet I wasn’t slowing down at all. I saw Eliza look at me. We were fast approaching the curve and I let off the gas but we were on a hill, not a steep one thankfully, but it wasn’t going to help with slowing down at all. There was very little I could do without breaks. I tried the emergency brake as well and the car slowed barely but it seemed to not do any good after a few moments.
She yelled for me to slow down and I was trying to keep my eyes on the road and the turn, but while I tried it didn’t stop the car from hydroplaning at the curve and sliding sharply into the field, the car hit a dip and then we flipped what felt like forever but it was probably only two times, the car landed upside down in the field. My abdomen and chest hurt badly and my head was throbbing. I looked over at Eliza and she was knocked out, there was a little bit of blood coming from her temple, but nothing gushing which was good.
I knew there was blood on my head, but nothing felt broken, yet I felt dizzy and woozy. I turned to look out my window which was facing the roadway, I could barely see the green van sitting on the road, I knew a car had been behind me. I tried to get my phone but couldn’t get it without unbuckling myself. I could see someone approaching the car, thank god someone had stopped.
“Hello?” I called.
I didn’t get a response but I could see the feet and legs and then the wind and rain was blowing in the now open door. I knew I was pretty much fine, but Eliza was unconscious and needed help first.
“My sister…” I said.
The feet moved and I felt a sharp sting in my thigh. I was confused on why I would be feeling that unless they had done something. I saw them leaning down but they were so blurry and before long my eyes were closing.
